Table at start of article[edit]

The table really doesn't add anything that is not already in the article. Why does Woodside have one and no other New York City neighborhood? patsw (talk) 17:52, 28 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

You're right. It doesn't add to what's already been described. I like the format more though. It saves reading through all the words. I'm not sure why that's not more popular though. No explicit evidence showing or describing evidence of significant Irish immigrant population[edit]

Woodside has served as the primary destination for more recent immigrants from Ireland as well, with many arriving in the mid-eighties searching for economic opportunities in New York City. Even as the neighborhood has seen growth in ethnic diversity today, the area still retains a strong Irish American presence with many Irish, although the growth in the Irish economy since the mid-1990s has slowed the arrival of new Irish. There are Irish pubs/restaurants scattered in Woodside.

Here's that quote. Historically, there was a large Irish-American population, and I credit the person who found the source showing it was 80% in 1930. However, there's no source, nor any numerical or statistical piece of evidence that foreign-born Irish people make a significant enough population, to Woodside. The reason why there is still a historical Irish influence in the neighborhood, is because of it's population from a while ago, which still has some of their descendants who currently live there today. Obviously, not just has their own economic growth occured, but there has been serious regression in our own economy. Unemployment is above 13 percent in New York City. It's actually relatively low in Ireland, compared to that. Ireland has the fifth highest human index in the world and third in Europe. That's based on a lot of things, mainly education, health care, life expentancy, and more than anything, standard of living, which they rank above the United States in.

Being citizens of the European Union, they have the privilege of living in other European countries, which includes the English speaking United Kingdom. The only place I've ever commonly met western Europeans who reside in the U.S, or uncommon foreigners, in New York City, or really in America period, was wealthy areas of Manhattan. I can't recall ever meeting one person, who wasn't well-educated, or who wasn't making decent money, who didn't live in an exclusive area in Manhattan, or occasionally, Brooklyn. They'd come for the same reasons as American transplants. Many of these people, regardless of where they choose to live, plan on going back home, and one American dollar is only about 80 cents to the Euro, so it's not like the conversion rate is something worth coming for. Also, as I'm sure many of you've heard of this, many Europeans don't think highly of American's, especially since our invasion of Iraq, so I doubt many would want to live here. Many of those illegals mentioned in some of those articles are just college graduates who didn't go home.

With all that said, I'll be revising the quote to, based on the lack of explicit or specific evidence:

Even as the neighborhood has seen growth in ethnic diversity today, the area still retains a strong Irish American presence There are Irish pubs/restaurants scattered in Woodside.

This article undermines all the specific Latin American and Asian immigrants, who aren't mentioned who live in Woodside, and make up a much more significant population. Throughout its history, Woodside has been the largest Irish American community in Queens, and has a large number of Irish expatriates.

Here is the other quote I'll be altering. If you're going to say large, specify on that number. There's actually a large number of a variety of Asian (ex. Chinese) and Latin American (ex. Colombian) immigrants in this neighborhood, who go unmentioned, and make up significant portions of the population. Provide a number, or a percentage, of how many of these people make up. What I meant to say was that the article mentions other groups, like Latino's, or Dominican's, but not in the same detail, yet they make a much more significant demographical impact to this neighborhood, than the small amount of Irish foreigners who live here. Tom72.73.230.11 (talk)

Reflecting its longtime Irish flavor, the neighborhood is filled with Irish pubs, many catering to natives of particular cities and regions in Ireland.

Where's the evidence to support that there are natives of Ireland going to these pubs, or the cities, or regions, being mentioned? I'll be removing this, since this actually isn't a proven statement.72.73.230.11 (talk) Tom72.73.230.11 (talk)

Upper class[edit]

Article states: "Woodside is a upper class and commercial neighborhood in the western portion of the New York City borough of Queens." What defines it as being upper class? How is it different from all its surrounding neighborhoods?

Feedback on article[edit]

I read the article and everything seems good, the page is informative and has a lot of usefull and interesting information.
