Demurral[edit]

Cruyff was voted second. and why are players like okocha and rensenbrink not on it? how can Ladislao Kubala be voted best player of FC Barcelona in the 20th century, but still be behind kocsis etc? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.204.59.126 (talk) 22:24, 24 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

World Soccer Player of the Year before 1982[edit]

You need to get the complete list

1952 Puskas 1953 Puskas 1954 Di Stefano 1956 Di Stefano 1957 Di Stefano 1962 Garrincha 1965 Eusebio 1966 Eusebio 1978 Kempes

They are listed in wikipedia articles of these same players. It is necessary to do a research, in most cases it's probable the missing World Player of the Year are similar to the French football balloon d'or, start looking for more information about those players. Did Pele ever got the World Soccer Player of the year? It isnt listed in his article in wikipedia. What about Cruyff? And Beckenbauer?

There was no World Soccer player of the year before 1982. The ones that appear in those articles are wrong. The award was only introduced in 1982. Comme (talk) 13:02, 2 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

5 wikipedia articles wrong? They are listed in the same way worldsoccer.about.com , is someone making all that up? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 190.136.189.206 (talk) 23:04, 2 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Yes they are all wrong. World Soccer magazine was started in October 1960, so how could Puskas et al have won those awards? For many years World Soccer published a World XI, selected by Eric Batty based on the best players in the world, but the player of theyear was only introduced in 1982. Fair use rationale for Image:WorldSoccer logo.jpg[edit]

Image:WorldSoccer logo.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

The 100 Greatest Players of the 20th Century[edit]

I'm from the german wikipedia and I want to write thist articel in german. Last time the list of the 100 greatest players of the 20th century often had changed. Is this the real list? Is there a source for the list? On http://www.worldsoccer.com/ I hadn't found anything. 79.192.251.127 (talk) 10:52, 3 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

==This list of 100 best players in history is not accurate.. Who came up with it? There is too much Bias in it to credible.

First of all, the most obvious and eye-popping sacrilege: the naming of the author's favourite players (even if obscure to most of the world) as part of the top 100 players ever! Example: Kenny Dalglish (#22 best ever player in history!) is ranked higher than the likes of Jairzhino, Rivelino, Socrates, Zidane, etc etc.

Who is Kenny? most importantly..who wants to know???? This is just one example of the sheer vulgarity of this top 100 list. There are plenty of more examples of this in this list.

Second of all: How can Goal Keepers be compared to Field players?? For Example: Pele is Ranked number 1 (correctly so) but in a list of best goal keepers ever, he would be ranked 1 billion places below Lev Yashin.

Same goes for comparisons between defenders and Forwards, and any other role combination you want.

Third point: There is too much sentimentality that gets in the way of accuracy in this incredibly bad top 100 list. For example: Franco Baresi is ranked a ridiculously high #19 in this list... a handy and tough defender at his peak, nevertheless gets recognition more for remaining in service for so long for the Azzuri rather than any particularly special ability he had. Don't get me wrong, he was a class defender but in a list of best defenders ever, he would rank top 20 at best! I mean, there is something really wrong in a list of Best Ever Players when Baresi is ranked #19 and Garrincha is ranked #20 !

One last point: I notice this list contains names of Welch and Scottish players that most of the world never heard of or would not be too faced if forgotten: Ian Rush, Neville Southhall, etc. The Author of that top 100 list is obviously Scottish (or at least Welch I am willing to guess).

Best Regards

Pending changes[edit]

This article is one of a number selected for the early stage of the trial of the Wikipedia:Pending Changes system on the English language Wikipedia. All the articles listed at Wikipedia:Pending changes/Queue are being considered for level 1 pending changes protection.

The following request appears on that page:

Comments on the suitability of theis page for "Pending changes" would be appreciated.

Please update the Queue page as appropriate.

Note that I am not involved in this project any much more than any other editor, just posting these notes since it is quite a big change, potentially

Persistent vandalism[edit]

This page seems to be continually vandalised by either Cristiano Ronaldo fans or Lionel Messi fans to make it appear that their favourite has the most awards. I tried to ask for this page to be semi-protected so that unconfirmed users can't just vandalise it easily but as I had fixed the past vandalism and it is not happening on a daily basis they wouldn't protect it. I've just fixed the vandalism again but it is a pain having to undo although these fake edits. Can anyone else help get this page protected?Sudiani (talk) 17:55, 13 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Wugapodes: please can you add the pending changes back to this page again? During the 6 months it was in place, the vandalism stopped significantly and was easy to fix but since it expired 3 weeks ago, we are now getting more regular vandalism of the page again which, for me, is a pain to fix. Is there a way to make the pending changes feature permanent for IP users? Sudiani (talk) 20:43, 28 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Sudiani: Can you take a look at the recent IP edit (from Jan 28)? I'm not sure whether it's good or not. At the moment I'm not sure PC protection is needed, but I'm still monitoring things and am willing to reconsider. Wug·a·po·des 01:58, 3 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Wugapodes: All seven of those IP edits are vandalism and need to be reverted. As were the other 3 since the protection came off (which have been reverted). As were almost all of the IP changes during the protection period. At least with the protection, they were easy to revert and the protection reduced the amount of vandalism. Sudiani (talk) 19:16, 3 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Pending-changes protected indefinitely. @Sudiani: Thanks, that info helps a lot! I've add pending changes indefinitely, but if IP edits are mostly vandalism it might be more effective to semi-protect. Let me know if things get worse, and thanks for your work maintaining this article! Wug·a·po·des 20:10, 3 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. Much appreciated. Sudiani (talk) 20:24, 3 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Awards section[edit]

Unless World Soccer's "Player of the Year" awards are widely recognized (i.e. covered in other press outlets) and considered a significant achievement (similar to Time's "Person of the Year" recognition, etc.), I don't see that their inclusion here meets the notability criteria. World Soccer as a magazine no doubt meets notability standards; I'm just not sure we should be dedicating 80% of the article to these awards. WikiDan61ChatMe!ReadMe!! 11:01, 26 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Apparently, no on chooses to dispute this. WikiDan61ChatMe!ReadMe!! 00:24, 30 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, i missed this proposal when it was first floated. Yes, they are widely regarded, see e.g here, here and here. Applying WP:BRD... Crowsus (talk) 01:17, 30 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Crowsus: Thanks for the feedback. WikiDan61ChatMe!ReadMe!! 11:17, 30 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Crowsus: Thanks for quickly reverting. I agree that this is an important part of the magazine for almost 40 years and is useful information and is notable, both for the players and public, and think the sources you shared support this.Sudiani (talk) 17:26, 30 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Numbers added to table[edit]

As a pending changes reviewer, I reverted this edit because I was unsure why those numbers were added. If, as I suspect, they were meant to signify the total times a player won this award, the table should be consistent and have these numbers added for any player that won more than one. A separate column might also work for this purpose. Picking out just 2 players and adding their totals to their names doesn't work, but I appreciate the sentiment and I don't necessarily think it was a bad idea. Just the execution was fumbled.
