Southwestern vs West[edit]

Just to note, and I may be able to dig up a cite somewhere, perhaps in Terry Glavin's book on Nemaiah but otherwise in an uncitable personal correspondence with him, that in Chilcotin Country parlance the Chilko Lake area is the "West Chilcotin"; presumably the Anahim-Nimpo area would be, then, the North Chilcotin? (he didn't say that); this came up in a discussion of the inappropriateness of the name South Chilcotin when applied to the Bridge River Country as it has come to be, and why it was that Chilko/Nemaia wasn't the South Chilcotin, but rather, according to the way folks talk, the West Chilcotin, whatever all the rest is; "west" I guess perhaps because it's a left turn off an otherwise northwestwards-bearing road that gets you there; vaguely in the direction of the sun, albeit actually southwest (musta been the time of year). I'm sure someone from up there will eventually be by here and can answer this; and like I said if it's in Terry's book it's citable, if it was something I learned from him otherwise unfortunately it's not. The term "West Chilcotin" pretty invariably refers to the Tatla Lake-Anahim Lake area (West Chilcotin Forest Products, West Chilcotin Trading Company, etc.) I don't know if Nemiah was once referred to as West Chilcotin, but I've never heard it myself. Also, "Stoney" refers to the Yunesit'in (Stone) band. Thanks mucho, input always needed, and sorry for the errors; I was winging it when I penned the stubs across the Chilcotin and elsewhere in BC. Anything you could add to any article in Category:Tsilhqot'in or Category:Chilcotin Country (main article Chilcotin District) or their subcats, please fire away. Also please bear in mind there's a distinction between government and tribe/ethno articles, e.g. in this case Xeni Gwet'in would be an article where a history and description of this people would be, interlinked with Xeni Gwet'in First Nation is about the government ("Indian Act government", as User:OldManRivers distinguishes band councils from traditional government, although I know in some cases ther personnel are the same...I don't mean Chilcotin-specific there btw). Community articles are again separate, especially as in some cases there are multiple communities within reserves (elsewhere in BC anyway if not in the Chilcotin; I'm thinking of Nkiat, Slosh, Skeil, Shalalth and Ohin all part of the Seton Lake First Nation, where I'm from (I'm non-aboriginal myself), or where the community name isn't the same as the name of the First Nation, as at Mount Currie vs Lil'wat Nation vs Lil'wat - community, government and ethno/culture/tribal articles, respectively. In this case Nemiah Valley is the place, Xeni Gwet'in is the people, Xeni Gwet'in is the institution of governance; Xeni Gwet'in Heritage Wilderness Park or whatever its name comes out as - officially Ts'il?os Provincial Park on the map), (or is there a distinction? I'm unclear...) and maybe there's a reason to have a Yohetta Valley article, though that seems more like a geographic article, like Taseko Lakes which I suspect needs yet to be written. Anyway, sounds like you're in the Chilcotin or familiar with the place; if you've got the time please indulge; Hanceville, Redstone, Chilanko, Alexis Creek, Anahim Lake, Tatla Lake, Nimpo Lake, Alkali Lake, Riske Creek and their associated band/First Nations governments; Ulkatcho First Nation has seen some work thanks to attention on Carey Price from hockey fans, btw...]]. All of those places/orgs and wherever else all could use some bits from you, maybe, whatever strikes your fancy, at least a basic stub (use something else for an example, especially for what categories to add); other editors will add things like infoboxes, but pictures are always nice so if you've got friends with cameras up there who also have internet access/upload capability, any article of anything looks better with pictures and illustrations and maps; this isn't all at once, just a general idea of the potential to encyclopedia-ize the Chilcotin and the Tsilhqot'in, and with lots of room for input by Tsilhqot'in people on articles about themselves; I encourage you to have a look around the categories related to this article and see what other articles might interest you to add to. And if it's alright, I'd like to have a Chilcotin/Tsilhqot'in person (aboriginal or otherwise) to wikichat with; see User talk:OldManRivers and many of the Skwxwu7mesh-related talkpages...Anyway, don't know who you are, Dave (suggest you make a wiki login ID), but thanks for fixing up these articles a bit; anything more you can take the time to do would be great; eventually coverage of BC First Nations people and their governments in BC should be pretty thorough....Skookum1 (talk) 05:21, 17 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
