South East Dorset Structure Plan 1977/8[edit]

Notes made on a while-I-remember basis for eventual inclusion in the article in some form.

The above plan was undertaken in 1978 after a roadshow based in a Yellow bus toured locations towards the end of 1977. One of the objectives was to improve public transport links between North Bournemouth and Poole and this was achieved by the following network changes;

Service 30 which had been a Boscombe to Kinson service was diverted to Poole along the Wallisdown and Ringwood Roads. The lack of Wallisdown to Kinson services was filled by extending the 10 service, which up to then had been a Bournemouth - Wallisdown - Maclean Road service, to Kinson. Until this change (and possibly afterwards?)the 10 would sometimes run on to Alum Chine through the Bourne Avenue side of Bournemouth Square, as the 17 route.

Another service to go in is the old 5 from Turbary Common to Southbourne Broadway. This ran 10 route to the Square then a convoluted route through the back streets of Boscombe and Southbourne. As passenger numbers fell this was gradually subsumed into the 10 route until only pure 10 route mileage was left. During the summer of 1972 or 3 (probably 3) this was the route where the Videmat coin machines were tried. They identified coins using a video device. They were not a success (I can recall seeing them on the bus but not ever seeing one working). they were removed quite quickly (check).

Old 5 route Turbary Park Avenue (turned using Canford Ave/Dawes Avenue) Kinson Road, Wallisdown Road, Talbot Avenue, Glenferness Avenue, Branksome Wood Road, Bourne Avenue, Bournemouth Square, Old Christchurch Road,(?) Holdenhurst Road, Southcote Road, Drummond Road (?) Christchurch Road, St John's Road, Owls Road, Percy Road,Beechwood Avenue, Southbourne Grove, Grand Avenue, Southbourne Cliffs Road, turning Harbour Road to Southbourne Cliffs Road(?). (needs Work from memory and doubtful in places).

Services 68 and 69 were introduced as Yellow Buses to replace the strangely circuitous Hants and Dorset 23 route that ran (eventually) from Bournemouth to Poole via Wallisdown and the Alder Plateau. Where the old 23 looped back on itself to run Bournemouth - Parkstone - Alderney - Wallisdown - Alder Road - Parkstone (again ) - North Road - Poole, the 68/ 60 ran round the Parkstone loop but ran to Wallisdown via Winton then round via Alderney and Parkstone, leaving the Poole / Alder Road section to the Wilts 164/5 routes.

Wilts and Dorset (then known in these parts as Hants and Dorset(?)

Service 26 Poole - Bear Cross - Ferndown (and beyond) was renumbered 161 and diverted to run via Kinson to improve Poole - North Bournemouth links.

Services 164 and 165 were introduced. Both ran from Poole to Wallisdown; 164 looped round the West Howe estate and returned to Poole while 165 went down through Winton to Moordown. Again, these were part of the plan's objective to improve Poole / North Bournemouth links. Britmax 23:38, 1 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yellow Buses in Wimborne?[edit]

I think there was at least one Yellow bus per day running into Wimborne Square for at least some period in the late 70's early 80's. I have a feeling it was an occasional extension of either a Kinson service, or Bear Cross. I'm pretty sure I remember seeing a Yellow Bus in Wimborne Square, again around the end of the 70's. Multiple Issues[edit]

History & fleet sections have multiple issues:

  • too much history detail, a detailed account of every route or timetable change is not encyclopedic
  • sentences poorly structured beginning with number/dates eg 27 September 2009 saw...
  • too much fleet detail, wiki is not a bus spotters forum
