Proposed Merge With Red card and/or Misconduct (football)[edit]

Support some sort of merge[edit]

Support - merging the articles will provide better context. Should make more clear that the RedCard/YellowCard system is applied to many sports, and should include a list of sports which use the system. Conditional Support - I would support a merge, as long as the title is not specific to something else. For example I would object to merging it into Red card, but I have no objection to something like "Warning cards". Conditional Support We need to distinguish the symbols from the situations where they apply. What we need are separate pages for:
- Yellow and red cards and other colours used in other games, with the history of the physical cards' introduction. Not all sports use these cards; in particular, American sports.
- Caution (sport), sin bin, Ejection (sports) separate pages for each type of situation which may produce a card, discussing all sports, whatever card (if any) symbolises them. Note that currently Sending off redirects to red card, not to Ejection (sports). There is also need to mention the basketball concept of fouling out. Possibly also we could have separate pages caution (football) and Sending off (football) if there is enough distinct content to justify it.

Support merging into Misconduct (football) with disambig pages or redirects[edit]

Strong oppose - these articles could easily be expanded with the specific offences that warrant red and yellow cards outlined, and ones where the referees have discretion and ones where the offences give automatic cards. Partial Merge Performed[edit]

It seems like the most common reason for supporting some form of merge was that most of the actual content of these pages pertained specifically to football (soccer) and/or that much of the content was already present in misconduct (football). On the other hand, one of the reasons for opposing the merge was that, in spite of the actual content of the articles, red and yellow cards are in fact used in many other sports. Therefore, I took all of the stuff from the yellow card and red card pages that pertained to football (soccer) and merged it into misconduct (football). This eliminates a lot of duplicated content and, at least IMHO, makes it much easier to understand how the whole system works by reading one article. At the same time, it doesn't make it appear as if yellow and red cards are restricted exclusively to that support. If anyone is so inclined, the red card and yellow card articles can still be expanded by adding information about the use of the cards in other sports. I realize this solution probably won't please everyone, but hopefully it addresses most of the concerns that have been raised to date. rhaas 01:14, 25 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
