Credentials Vs Certifications[edit]

I found it slightly confusing the use of the words, 'credentials,' and, 'certifications,' on the Yoga Alliance website, so I emailed them. Below is a copy (with some minor edits for brevity) of my conversation with the Yoga Alliance representative.

Representative:

Thank you for contacting Yoga Alliance.

Yoga Alliance is a non-profit registry organization. We do not provide yoga teacher trainees with certificates, the schools that are registered with Yoga Alliance do. We refer to our designations as credentials not certifications.

In order to register with Yoga Alliance you will need to have completed a teacher training program of 200-hours or 500-hours and provide a certificate of completition. For more information, on Yoga Alliance extensive history, please go to Our History page.

Me:

So would a teacher say, "I have a RYT credential," and a school say, "I have a RYS credential"?

Representative:

That is correct, RYTs stands for Registered Yoga Teacher and RYS stands for Registered Yoga School. Please refer to the Credentialing page on our site.
