Name and Linkages[edit]

I only know him as Choo Seonghoon (the Korean version of his name, which he uses in that country). Is there a way to make that name link to him? I don't have the skills to do that or I'd do it myself. CsikosLo (talk) 17:09, 10 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Romanization of his name[edit]

After a correction, then a reversal of the correction, it seems we have a dilemma on the spelling of the English version of his name -- it also seems there are two versions in use.

It is my position that his name should be romanized as Chu Seong-hoon, based on Revised Romanization of Korean (q.v.). I prefer that system because it is the one used by the Korean government.

When I corrected to that, it was changed back to Chu Sung-hoon but I don't know what that's based on -- I can no romanization system that changes to that, but acknowledge that it is in use. Since editting back and forth is pointless, I would like to discussion here -- that's what this page is for, after all ;)

I do not intend to present myself as an expert on romanization of Korean, but I do go to Korea frequently and Korean is the second language in my family, so I am not entirely ignorant either.

I look forward to discussion from others on this. CsikosLo (talk) 16:20, 14 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I agree and made the change. 155.213.224.59 (talk) 17:14, 27 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

"Sexyama"[edit]

It's not just an internet meme. Akiyama himself acknowledged the nickname in a recent Sherdog.com interview. 71.204.141.7 (talk) 11:10, 31 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

That'd be this I assume? I'd like to see him using it himself before adding it to the article as his actual nickname. (To note that he's actually being called it is another issue altogether IMO, and I don't think I'd have a problem with it since we have a reliable source). --aktsu (t / c) 11:16, 31 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I think that nickname is generally accepted as reception for him. I edited the sentence a little since despite the fact that he does not have a lot of fans yet being new to the UFC, he is still often titled Sexyama by many people, not only his loyal fans.Jonhan (talk) 20:45, 12 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Even at the UFC 100 weigh ins he was referred to as Sexyama, lol. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.237.188.4 (talk) 00:36, 11 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hmm is there a reason why someone keeps removing his Sexyama nickname?Jonhan (talk) 22:20, 17 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Because it is not his actual nickname in an MMA-sense, i.e. a nickname he use/endorse. It is something people call him, which since it's sourced is OK to mention, but it isn't a nickname he himself goes by -- which is what the nickname-field in the infobox is for. --aktsu (t / c) 23:41, 17 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Agree, but its being removed elsewhere as well initially (outside of his nickname). Was that due to vandalism? Jonhan (talk) 00:27, 18 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Singing career?[edit]

I was under the impression that Akiyama had a fairly successful singing career in Japan/Korea, which was mentioned by Joe Rogan during the UFC 100 telecast. There's video of him on YouTube performing in front of large audiences. So I was surprised that there was no mention of it here. Link to video below: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bHIJLNizDfA Aoa8212 (talk) 14:26, 16 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Likewise, there isn't something like an "entertainment career" section on this page yet, although some of his TV appearances are documented here. In recent years he's been transitioning to TV shows. Probably deserves an independent section. Maybe someone more confident in Korean and Japanese can do it. Iserlon (talk) 20:07, 3 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
