The result of the move request was: moved. There is a consensus in this discussion that the bold move to "Zamfara" should be reverted to restore the status quo. Furthermore, the sources provided by participants in this RM make it clear that the most common way to refer to this entity is as "Zamfara State". The editor who carried out the bold move has not provided any sources to back up his or her actions, and nor has the only other opposer. Given this situation, it makes sense to restore the status quo, as above, and per WP:TITLECHANGES. Zamfara → Zamfara State – This page was moved without discussion by user:Jamie Tubers on 25 September 2015 from the normal name, "Zamfara State". In Nigeria, state names are almost invariably given as "XYZ State". Other than newspaper headlines, the word "Zamfara" alone is rarely used to refer to the state. A search for zamfara in Google News gives the following article text fragments on the first page of results:

The bold move of the article on this major topic should be undone, followed by a formal move request if appropriate. However, it is clear from the above searches that the state name is almost always given in the form "Zamfara State", as is the case with all other Nigerian states. This may be because the states are recent creations, named after existing terms associated with the area. Zamfara is named after an old independent state, as are Bornu, Kano, Sokoto etc., while others like Delta, Plateau or Cross River are named after geographical features.   • Oppose per WP:CONCISE, and because the "evidence" presented above is cherry-picked and one-sided, consisting simply of examples of the usage of the longer term, without any information on the frequency of the longer vs. the shorter.   • The evidence above is not "cherry picked". It is all the results from the first page of a Google News search, and all the results from the first page of a Google Books search. The name is almost always written "Zamfara State". Aymatth2 (talk) 16:12, 28 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose:Since Zamfara is the primary topic, it is pretty redundant to add the adjective "State" to it. Also, using google search, Anambra brings up a larger chunk of search results. So per WP:CONCISE and by extension, WP:COMMONNAME, the article name is fine as it is.--Jamie Tubers (talk) 02:40, 15 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

    • WP:CONCISE is irrelevant. Wikipedia:Naming conventions (geographic names) is the relevant guideline, saying "By following modern English usage, we also avoid arguments about what a place ought to be called, instead asking the less contentious question, what it is called." In this case, as search results show, it is called "Zamfara State". The article should be moved back to the long-standing former title. A formal move request to the odd-looking US-style "Zamfara" but may then be submitted, I suppose. Aymatth2 (talk) 16:12, 28 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support A quick check of the All Africa site (an African news aggregator) shows that the claim that it is almost always referred to as "Zamfara State" is correct, and therefore that is the WP:COMMONNAME.   • Comment. Most of the bold moves of articles on Nigerian states to US-style naming have now been undone. 35 of of the 36 articles again follow the normal Nigerian "XYZ State" convention. The move from "Zamfara State" to "Zamfara" was made without discussion. The title should be reverted to the long-standing "Zamfara State". If the editor who made the bold and controversial move to "Zamfara" still feels it is warranted, they should submit a formal proposal for discussion. Aymatth2 (talk) 00:32, 2 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

German: Adamaua: French: Adamaoua) is a traditional state located in Fombina, an area which now roughly corresponds to arcas of Adamawa State and Taraba state in Nigeria. and previously also in the three northern provinces of Cameroon (Far North. North, and Adamawa), including minor Parts of Western Chad and the Central African Republic. It was founded by Modibo Adama, a commander of Sheikh Usman dan Fodio, the man who began the Fulani jihad in 1809. The capital was moved several times until it settled in Yola, Nigeria on the banks of the Benue River in Nigeria around 1841. At the time of Adama's dealh his realm encompassed parts of modern Nigeria and much of north Cameroon. It was technically part of the Fulani Empire, and it had to pay a tribute to the leaders in Sokoto And the Supreme Emir Is Sarkin Zamfara Anka.

Population[edit]

these figures of "a population of 9,278,873 according to the 2006 census" are at odds with the other sources giving the 2006 census population as 3,278,873. a discrepancy of 6 million. Similarly the "Estimate (2011) 9,838,160" and 9,278,873[1] for 2021 census. What census in 2021? I also noticed this and edited the 2006 figure to accurately reflect that figure. I can't access the 2021 "census" figures but I also find it highly unlikely that the population tripled and is somehow exactly 6 million more than in 2006. Brutannica (talk) 18:03, 21 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
