Starting to write the article[edit]

I am just starting to write the article about one of the longest running youth theatre groups in the UK and I have obviuosly made a mistake about putting the show dates etc in the article _ I will remove these now and will start to build article based on the history of the company and it's achievements etc

Hope this stops the deletion

Many thanks

Scott

Proposed deletion discussion[edit]

Deletion has been proposed with reason: Unsourced (or sourced only to its website) for over 6 years with no improvement. Seems to be a local theatre group and, though long lived, there's no evidence of wider notability. Fails WP:GNG.

I've since added some citing, and thought it worth debating this. I do have sympathy with the request, as this is simply a local theatre group. There seem to be two applicable notability policies, discussed in turn below:

  • WP:GNG: Now I've added 8 cites, 5 of which are local media from 3 different media sources (including BBC, but local not national), I think it just passes this policy. There are in fact a lot more local media coverage that could be cited; if we wanted to there are local press reports on pretty much every production. But virtually no national coverage, but WP:GNG does not seem to require that.
  • WP:NONPROFIT: Passes the "multiple reliable sources that are independent" criteria. But "scope of their activities is national or international in scale" is dubuous for Zenith. Looking at the "Additional considerations" for guidance:
    • "Nationally well-known local organizations": probably not, except it has won the nationally significant Queen's Award for Voluntary Service.
    • It does score well against: "organization’s longevity, size of membership, major achievements". Its longevity is significant, "only eight years younger than the National Youth Theatre" is notable.

Although it is on the margins, I think this is just about notable enough for WP. I wouldn't create it myself, but as has already been here since 2008 I would vote for retention, with a bit more improvement. I think the award of the national Queen's Award for Voluntary Service makes the difference. If you look at the articles in Youth Theatre (disambiguation) there seem to be many poorly/not cited WP articles for less notable youth theatres than Zenith. Views? I'm glad someone has taken the time to improve it and remove the PROD template. As you say, there are many other far poorer articles than this (though this one still has its faults of course). Sionk (talk) 16:41, 8 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
