Nick Solak

Nick Solak in 2022
Nick Solak in 2022

Improved to Good Article status by NotReallySoroka (talk). Self-nominated at 17:40, 25 June 2022 (UTC).

General: Article is new enough and long enough
Policy: Article is sourced, neutral, and free of copyright problems
Hook: Hook has been verified by provided inline citation
Image: Image is freely licensed, used in the article, and clear at 100px.
QPQ: None required.

Overall: Everything checks out. I prefer the first hook to the second, and would change it to ... that American baseball player Nick Solak (pictured) was named after a sports bar?. Nehme1499 18:54, 25 June 2022 (UTC)

  • @Nehme1499: Thank you for reviewing my DYK promptly. However, I would like to keep my version of the hook if Solak is not pictured, because I think my joke would work better if readers do not expect Solak to be a baseball player. However, if he is pictured, then your hook would be better since the picture already shows him with baseball equipment. Thanks. NotReallySoroka (talk) 23:01, 25 June 2022 (UTC)
I have no issue with this. Though, forgive my ignorance, what would the average reader expect Solak to be? Nehme1499 23:05, 25 June 2022 (UTC)
@Nehme1499: Sorry for my late reply. I would argue that they would not have much of an expectation on whom Solak is; they might well expect him to be a businessman, politician, or other things. This sets them up for a good surprise when they learn that Solak is a baseball player named after a sports bar (where his parents met). On another note, thank you for adding the "in 2022" to the caption, and the message below may also be of interest be you. NotReallySoroka (talk) 05:52, 26 June 2022 (UTC)
  • To the promoter: First, thank you in advance for considering this nomination. Reading through the above conversation, I think the best hooks are either ... that Nick Solak is named for a sports bar? if Solak is not pictured or ... that American baseball player Nick Solak (pictured) is named for a sports bar? if Solak would be pictured. I would prefer named after over named for in both hooks, but I am afraid that it would be overly similar to the source whose first sentence is Nick Solak is named after a sports bar. Moreover, the word "sports" can be removed from either hook to further confuse the reader on April Fools'. Please ping when replying, and thanks again! • NotReallySoroka, I've struck ALT1. All hook facts are required to actually be in the article. Yes, you could theoretically add Chris Bryant's birthday to the article, but this is an encyclopedia; we don't add completely unrelated, irrelevant trivia to articles even if it would make for a good hook (which would definitely not be the case here). As for the first hook (well, both of them, actually), if a joke has to be explained, it's probably not a good joke. And if it's still not a joke after being explained, it's a really bad candidate for April Fools' Day. In case it's just me, maybe we can get another opinion: Bueller ... Bueller?  MANdARAXXAЯAbИAM  04:26, 27 June 2022 (UTC)
You rang?
  • ALT0 is fine, and reasonably interesting, but it's definitely not an April 1 hook because it doesn't in any way fool the reader. But let me suggest:
ALT2 ... that baseball player Nick Solak (pictured) was named after the sports bar where his parents first met?
Sorry, I can't endorse ALT1 -- the word "strained" comes to mind. I also don't think the image slot should be wasted on a pic of a guy in dark glasses with a mitt who looks like every other guy in dark glasses with a mitt. I checked the article to see if there's some overlooked hook material, but I'm not seeing anything. Bottom line: I suggest ALT2, without the pic, in the last (quirky) slot.
