Shorwell helmet[edit]

Sources:
Shorwell, Hood et al. 2012, p. 83: "When the single identifiable grave was excavated by members of the Isle of Wight Archaeology and Historic Environment Service in November 2004 it was found to contain what was provisionally identified as a fragmentary iron 'vessel'."
Pioneer, Read 2006, p. 38: "A large iron object, provisionally identified as a 'bucket', was found adjacent to the body's left hip. ... The 'bucket' was X-radiographed immediately and the first results showed it to be a helmet in profile with a boar straddling its apex."
Coppergate, Tweddle 1992, pp. 851–853: "At about 2:40pm the bucket of his machine struck a solid object. Chris Wade, the foreman of that part of the site, believing the object was a stone, stopped the work to see how large it was. He ran his fingers over the object, exposing a golden-looking band on which lettering was clearly visible, and recognised that the object was not a stone but a helmet."

  • This recently expanded article is new enough, long enough, and well written. Hook is very interesting and supported with offline academic sources, accepted AGF. No copyvio found (Earwig reports a high likelihood for copyvio, but the matches are mostly quotations, titles of cited works, and set phrases). QPQ is done. Good to go. You might wish to combine this with Template:Did you know nominations/Pioneer Helmet into a double-barrelled DYK, but that's up to you. One more thing, though not a DYK issue, is that the articles' capitalization seems inconsistent, with a capitalized H for Pioneer Helmet and Coppergate Helmet, but lowercase for Shorwell helmet. I believe academic sources tend not to capitalize generic words. -Zanhe (talk) 01:13, 16 December 2017 (UTC)
  • @Usernameunique: Hi, I came by to promote this, but wonder what you're going to do about the inconsistent capitalization of "helmet" in the hook. Are you taking Zanhe's suggestion and lowercasing the other article titles? Yoninah (talk) 23:32, 15 January 2018 (UTC)
  • Sorry for the delay Yoninah, overlooked your ping. There's a lack on consensus on "helmet" vs. "Helmet" (see Talk:Coppergate Helmet#Coppergate Helmet vs. Coppergate_helmet), and I can see both sides. I prefer "helmet," but if any of them is capitalized, I can understand "Pioneer Helmet," which was actually named after a company (Pioneer Aggregates). To get around it, however, how about:
ALT1: ... that of the six known Anglo-Saxon helmets, the Shorwell helmet was originally mistaken for a pot, the helmet from Wollaston for a bucket, and the helmet from York for a rock? --Usernameunique (talk) 06:25, 27 January 2018 (UTC)
  • Restoring tick. I'd prefer to have the capitalization inconsistency resolved, but if consensus cannot be reached, that's really outside the scope of DYK and we should not be holding back this nomination because of that. I still prefer the original hook, and the capitalization inconsistency can be easily hidden using pipes. -Zanhe (talk) 23:03, 28 January 2018 (UTC)
  • Thanks Zanhe. Taking your suggestion of using pipes, here's ALT2. My preference is towards an uncapitalized "helmet," so I would prefer ALT2 as well.
ALT2: ... that of the six known Anglo-Saxon helmets, the Shorwell helmet was originally mistaken for a pot, the Pioneer helmet for a bucket, and the Coppergate helmet for a rock? --Usernameunique (talk) 23:10, 28 January 2018 (UTC)
  • OK, thanks all. We'll go with ALT2. Yoninah (talk) 23:13, 28 January 2018 (UTC)
