Tjele helmet fragment[edit]

The Tjele helmet fragment
The Tjele helmet fragment

Source: Munksgaard 1984, p. 87: "Viking Age helmets are extremely rare. Two fragments from Gotland, one helmet from Gjermundby in Norway, and the fragment from Tjele." Also Tweddle 1992, pp. 1126–28 "The helmet fragments from Tjele, Denmark, and Kiev both consist of eyebrows and nasal made in a single piece, with evidence of possible extensions towards the base of the nasal. It is likely that both of them are parts of facemasks of the Gjermundbu type. . . . There is very little relationship between these Viking Age crested helmets and the Coppergate helmet."

Source: Munksgard 1984, p. 87: "Boye registered it in 1858 as a saddle mounting but without an illustration. The object has for 130 years led an unnoticed existence in our public galleries until I stumbled on it two years ago."

  • Quality prose, extremely well-referenced article, rare subject matter: great DYK material! — JFG talk 15:41, 7 July 2017 (UTC)
  • Suggest ALT2 hook: "…that only five Viking Age helmets have ever been discovered, including the Tjele helmet fragment? (pictured)" — JFG talk 15:41, 7 July 2017 (UTC)
@Cwmhiraeth: Would you like a citation in the lead? The relevant line in the body ("A contemporary helmet was found in Gjermundbu, Norway, while fragments from three others were found in Gotland—one in Lokrume and one in Högbro—and in Kiev.") is cited to a discussion of those five helmets (e.g., "In Scandinavia there is one reconstructable helmet from the 10th century, from Gjermundbu, Norway, a fragment of a crested helmet from Tjele, Denmark and two fragments from Gotland, from Lokrume and Högbro, Halla. In addition there is a fragmentary inlaid eyebrow and nasal piece, very similar to the Tjele example, from Kiev.").
The list of helmets in the Sutton Hoo helmet article are those with shared characteristics ("crested helmets") from approximately the 6th through 10th centuries. The five known Viking Age helmets are a subset of that, just as are the six known Anglo-Saxon helmets. I would be happy to make that more clear in the Tjele article if it would help clear up the confusion. Thanks! --Usernameunique (talk) 16:55, 21 July 2017 (UTC)
I am absolutely ignorant of this subject. The Viking Age article defines the period as "The Viking Age is the period from the late 8th century to the mid-11th century". Your hook seems to imply that only 5 helmets are known from this whole period. Your final paragraph mentions 5 helmets being "the end of the line of "crested helmets" ", but it does not state that that they are the only surviving helmets from the whole Viking era. @Cwmhiraeth: Okay I think I see what you're saying. I've added a line, and two references, to unequivocally state that those five helmets are the only ones surviving from the whole Viking era. Please let me know if that is sufficient, or if you would like me to add anything else. --Usernameunique (talk) 18:50, 21 July 2017 (UTC)
  • That should be fine. Restoring the tick. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 19:07, 21 July 2017 (UTC)
