Wally Schirra[edit]

  • ... that NASA astronaut Wally Schirra was Walter Cronkite's co-anchor during the seven Moon landings? Source: Schirra, Wally; Billings, Richard (1988). Schirra's Space. Annapolis, MD: Naval Institute Press. ISBN 1-55750-792-9
  • Comment: The source of the hook is on page 221-223

Improved to Good Article status by Balon Greyjoy (talk). Self-nominated at 02:58, 21 May 2018 (UTC).

  • Reviewing... Chris857 (talk) 04:42, 26 May 2018 (UTC)
  • Article was promoted to GA status recently enough, I took the liberty of adding some needed formatting to the hook, hook is short enough and sourced and pretty interesting (though he's got a lot of other interesting stuff).
  • Minor issues:
    • "co-authored the book 1962 We Seven" - I assumed this should say "co-authored the 1962 book We Seven"? Done
    • Per rule 3b, the citation for working with Cronkite has to be no later than the end of that sentence, and it's currently one sentence too far away. Done
    • Is this your first DYK submission? If so, you don't need to do a QPQ review.
    • IMDb seems less than ideal for the portrayal credits. Not a big deal to me or this review, but do we have better options available?
  • Chris857 (talk) 04:56, 26 May 2018 (UTC)
Hi Chris857. I am dropping by to try and tidy this up for Balon Greyjoy. My preference would be to keep it simple and move it on. This is the nominator's first DYK so QPQ does not apply. I am inclined to leave the IMDb issue unless you insist. Relevant two sentences in the article tweaked to meet 3b.
Anything else? Gog the Mild (talk) 17:06, 6 July 2018 (UTC)
  • Thank you Gog, this is good to go (AGF on offline sources). I'm not going to hold this up over the IMDb sources. Chris857 (talk) 02:48, 9 July 2018 (UTC)
  • Hi, I came by to promote this, but there is a significant amount of close paraphrasing from this source [1] which is not public domain. I also think it would be easy to cite the films he appeared in by referencing a cast list or movie book. Yoninah (talk) 19:09, 9 July 2018 (UTC)
  • Hi Narutolovehinata5 I was happy to pick up what looked like a couple of inconsequential points to get the nomination through, but feel uncomfortable doing any serious work on the article. I could sort out the copy vio, if that is all it takes, but "referencing a cast list or movie book" is outside my competence set. Gog the Mild (talk) 16:31, 24 July 2018 (UTC)
  • User:Kees08, who made a major contribution to the article and has been heavily involved in articles on several other US astronauts, has volunteered to sort out these issues, but has asked for some time to do so. See here. Gog the Mild (talk) 15:09, 25 July 2018 (UTC)
  • I am jumping in to assist as well. I took care of the IMDb sources first thing. I will tackle the close paraphrasing next. @Yoninah:, can we hold this for WP:S2019? I will be sure to confirm with Balon Greyjoy when they return from their wiki-break. --- Coffeeandcrumbs 00:39, 25 August 2018 (UTC)
  • I made some edits to reduce similarities from the NASA 40th bio. Earwig is still showing a 48.5% violation likelihood; however, the similarities to the source material are mostly proper nouns, especially the titles of the awards and organizations. Balon Greyjoy (talk) 06:01, 25 August 2018 (UTC)
  • I request that this DYK be reserved for July 2019, specifically for Coffeeandcrumbs's planned commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the moon landing on the main page. Balon Greyjoy (talk) 06:28, 25 August 2018 (UTC)
  • Ready for new review. I have edited most of the close paraphrasing out. This should be good now at 14.5%. --- Coffeeandcrumbs 22:36, 25 August 2018 (UTC)
  • Should be good to go now, rest of the review per above. Unfortunately July 2019 is way too far away. I note that the anniversary of his Mercury flight is on October 3. Special occassion hooks generally should be proposed within six weeks of the nomination, but @Yoninah, BlueMoonset, and Cwmhiraeth: would it be fine to do a IAR special occassion hook for October 3? Narutolovehinata5 tccsdnew 23:51, 26 August 2018 (UTC)
Hmmmm, well the rule over at WP:DYKSG says that the requirement is six weeks. July 20 is almost a year away, by contrast. I know the rule is regularly ignored, but I'm not sure if there's much precedent for such long requests for anything other than April Fools' day. If there's consensus to do it, I wouldn't oppose it, but it seems kind of odd nevertheless. Maybe this needs to be mentioned at WT:DYK to get a wider hearing? Narutolovehinata5 tccsdnew 00:08, 27 August 2018 (UTC)
@Narutolovehinata5: I was involved in the effort to compile 24 hours worth of hooks for Frank Sinatra's birthday in 2015. I think we did it in more than 6 weeks, but everyone at WT:DYK knew what we were doing. Yoninah (talk) 00:26, 27 August 2018 (UTC)
I am new to this but I have created WP:WikiProject Space 2019/DYK specifically to start collecting these. @Narutolovehinata5:, I agree we should discuss this at WT:DYK again to gain wider support. I was just waiting for a first example. I will start a discussion there. I am not sure how to link to DYK approved page. I will ask Yoninah's help once the DYK communittee comes to an agreement. If all else fails, we can post this on October 3.--- Coffeeandcrumbs 00:16, 27 August 2018 (UTC)
@Yoninah and Narutolovehinata5: I have started a discussion at WT:DYK#S2019. --- Coffeeandcrumbs 01:44, 27 August 2018 (UTC) As the WT:DYK discussion has been archived and no consensus appears to have been reached as of yet, I've tentatively moved this to the special occasion area for October 3. If consensus later on is to instead hold this until July 2019, it will be noted on this page. Narutolovehinata5 tccsdnew 06:43, 24 September 2018 (UTC)
