Siege of Mariupol

Pete the Cat (4 June 1970 - 20 May 2022) was a Russian separatist fighter who served under the Somalia Battalion during the war in Donbas, which pledged allegiance to the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic, a breakaway state in Ukraine governed by Russian separatists.

Biography[edit]

During an interview with Komsomolskaya Pravda shortly after the ceasefire that took place during the end of the Battle of Avdiivka, Pete stated that he was experienced a desire to fight for the DPR after his brother-in-law, also a Russian separatist, was killed during a skirmish with Ukrainian forces at the south of a Luhansk People's Republic controlled territory in early 2015.

Death[edit]

During the early hours of the morning on the twentieth of May 2022, Pete was assisting a bomb disposal unit in clearing land mines that were supposedly scattered around the Azovstal steel production plant, when a TM-57 anti-tank mine detonated under where he stood, instantly killing him. According to autopsy reports, two-thirds of his lower extremities were blown off in the blast, and almost all of the shrapnel wounds found on his body were located near his chin and forehead. As Pete's face was rendered unrecognizable, it was only until the twenty-third of May, 2022 when his corpse was identified in the morgue and sent back home to his family in western Russia.

Involvement in the Second Battle of Donetsk Airport[edit]

Little is known about Pete's involvement in the Second Battle of Donetsk Airport, but there are medical documents alluding towards the idea that Pete the Cat was wounded during Ukrainian-led shelling of DPR positions that were targeting the villages that the separatist forces had taken refuge in.

Involvement in the 2022 Russian Invasion of Ukraine[edit]

Pete had partaken in the Siege of Mariupol during the 2022 Russian Invasion of Ukraine acting as an automatic rifleman position for his squad, led by Mikhail Ivan Petrov. There are no direct combat reports related to this group, even though they were deployed directly to the eastern front-lines, located near Mariupol.
