Personal reflections[edit]

My first article…

As part of an educational assignment for the Interaction, Experience & Engagement module at the University of Hull, School of Art and New Media (2014), which I am currently attending, I have joined 'Wikipedia'. On initial registration I started to create my user page where I introduced myself with a limited amount of information about me, why I became a Wikipedian, what my interests are and what articles I am currently working on. For myself I felt that the second stage was to learn as much as possible on how Wikipedia works; for example the talk page, links, sandbox, reference and wiki markups.

Due to my strong interest in digital Media, Art and graphic design, I have chosen to edit the Lovebytes article with two of my course classmates. Lovebytes is a digital art organisation based in Sheffield, and it explores the cultural and creative potential of digital technology. They have held many festivals between 1994 and 2012 in the U.K. They have also placed many of their pieces in different locations across Sheffield, which has in turn attracted a significant amount of positive media attention.

The information we presented on this article is the result of a long and arduous period of research carried out by my group. The article contains information about the company, a small portion of their history and a list of projects and events they have produced since 1994. We attempted to reference all the information but unfortunately most are primary sources from artist websites or other companies that have been working or commissioned by the Lovebytes group. However, we managed few secondary sources from other areas, which included the BBC and The Guardian. Collectively we felt there was not sufficient information to produce a complete assignment but as a group we decided to continue developing the article in the future.

During the process of editing the sandbox, I have been engaging with my classmates either through Wikipedia or privately to exchange information and ideas. I have looked at other articles, read tutorials and discussed with them what I felt was the best for our article.

With respect to communication and engagement, I have contacted two other classmates who were working on other articles relating to Lovebytes, asking if I could have a look and share some of the information we had in our article, which could possibly benefit their work.

As soon as the article we produced went live I received a message on my talk page stating that a couple of links were pointing to a disambiguation page. I fixed this issue promptly and replied to the sender via his talk page with appreciation about the feedback. Another user also left a message on the article talk page suggesting I added some more external sources like Flickr Photo gallery or possibly use some YouTube content. This I found useful and informative as I appreciate positive feedback as well as constructive criticism.

Although my time spent on Wikipedia was short it was very intensive, and I felt I had learnt a significant amount of useful tips and tricks regarding the production of writing Wikipedia articles. However, I am still a novice in this field, and I feel that it would be an asset for me to learn more regarding this Internet encyclopedia and therefore gaining more skills to produce better work.

To do list[edit]

  • Paolo Conte: Discography
  • Lucio Battisti: Translate albums/songs articles from the corresponding article in the Italian Wikipedia.
