The Centre for Digital Governance is a research institute located in Berlin, Germany. Established in 2020,[1] it is one of the five Centres of Competence of the Hertie School a graduate school of governance.

Research activities[edit]

The Centre's research focus can be further divided into three strands: digitalization of government; platform regulation (including social media governance); and artificial intelligence and human development.[2] Its working language is English, though some of its works have also been published in German.[3]

Amid its complete projects are "The User Potential of AI and Distributed Ledger Technology in Public Administration", done in conjunction with the Tallinn University of Technology and commissioned by the Office of Technology Assessment at the German Bundestag.[4] Other works on digitalization of government include surveys with federal, state and local authorities[5] and managers of German administrations, the latter done in collaboration with the Boston Consulting Group. [6][7][8] The Centre also has other ongoing projects about the Digital Services Act,[9] responsible artificial intelligence[10] and Europe's Artifical Intelligence Act.[11]

Members of the core faculty and associated researchers have contributed to articles in American technology magazine Wired[12] and German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine.[13]

Besides the faculty's publications and projects, the Centre for Digital Governance also houses a blog[14] and a student working paper series.[15]

Members of the core faculty include current Centre Director Gerhard Hammerschmid, Joanna Bryson, and Daniela Stockmann. Also affiliated with the Centre are professors Luciana Cingolani, Thurid Hustedt, Slava Jankin, Simon Munzert, Andrea Rommele and Kai Wegrich.[16]

The Centre for Digital Governance also houses PhD researchers and visiting scholars.
