ApplicationXtender (also known as AX) is enterprise content management software owned by EMC Corporation, targeted for Small and Medium Businesses.

History[edit]

ApplicationXtender was created in 1992 by Optical Technology Group (OTG) Software and was part of the Xtender Family comprising of ArchiveXtender, DiskXtender, ApplicationXtender, COLDXtender, ERMXtender, WebXtender, WorkflowXtender etc. Legato Systems acquired OTG Software in Feb 2002 for $403mm.[1] Legato Systems was acquired by EMC Corporation in July 2003 for $1.3b.[2] ApplicationXtender was combined with Documentum in 2005 to form current Information Intelligence Group (IIG) business division.

Products[edit]

ApplicationXtender Document Manager[edit]

ApplicationXtender Document Manager (AppXtender Document Manager) is the heart of a complete, fully integrated suite of enterprise content management solutions. AppXtender Document Manager maximizes the value of information by providing more efficient means of:

  • Capturing different kinds of electronic content - documents, images, video, audio and making them part of an enterprise data pool, while still maintaining them in their own native file formats.
  • Intelligently accessing content - gives users the ability to easily search and retrieve the exact information they need via desktop.

AppXtender Document Manager delivers fast, cost effective access to a central pool of mission-critical information. It gives competitive advantage as it reduces costs:

  • Minimizes printing and duplication of documents as well as reducing the amount of physical storage.
  • Eliminates time-consuming manual searches of paper files or microfiche and/or sifting through unrelated information.

ApplicationXtender WebAccess[edit]

AppXtender WebAccess (WX) allows users to access AppXtender content management functionality via intranet or the Internet. ApplicationXtender Web Access (AppXtender Web) provides efficient and inexpensive content delivery - both inside and outside organization - by allowing to:

  • Import and scan content
  • Retrieve, view, and manage content using standard browsers
  • Enable e-business or e-commerce applications by giving them access to content via the web

AppXtender WebAccess depends on the Microsoft .NET Framework. AppXtender Web.NET is compatible with and requires Microsoft Internet Information Server (IIS) for Windows.[3]

ApplicationXtender Capture Package[edit]

EMC ApplicationXtender Capture Package enables fast, efficient document imaging, including both high-speed batch scans and configurable queue processing. It is feature-rich and easy to use, allowing for large-volume image acquisition and indexing. ApplicationXtender Capture Package integrates seamlessly with EMC ApplicationXtender and is a key component of a complete, high-volume image-capture solution.

EMC ApplicationXtender Capture Package delivers:

  • Easy installation, configuration, and operation — Rapidly deploy ApplicationXtender Capture Package to address document-imaging requirements.
  • Full-featured batch-scan and index — Perform all major batch-scan and index functions including input, import, index, and output processing.

  • Robust process reporting — Establish key performance indicators and business activity thresholds to monitor processes and measure productivity.[5]

ApplicationXtender Reports Management[edit]

EMC ApplicationXtender Reports Management facilitates the electronic presentation of statements, bills, invoices, policies, contracts, and other business information. Able to handle advanced print streams as well as traditional computer output to laser disk (COLD) text formats, ApplicationXtender Reports Management significantly reduces costs associated with paper, film, and microfiche.

ApplicationXtender Reports Management is an electronic reports management (ERM) solution that maintains the format of print stream reports to ensure exact replication in PDF format. It also provides a powerful data extraction tool for intelligent parsing and indexing of reports.

EMC ApplicationXtender Reports Management delivers:

  • Automatic report indexing — Process, index, and store reports within ApplicationXtender as they are produced.
  • Advanced print streams support — Preserve advanced formatting with support for AFP, Metacode, PCL, and PDF print streams as well as traditional formats such as ASCII and EBCDIC.
  • Dynamic print streams — Comingle print streams and leverage dynamic formatting within print streams.
  • High-fidelity electronic display — Display electronic reports in same format as print versions, improving customer service.
  • System monitoring — Audit system use and performance and confirm job completion.
  • Long-term report archiving — Provide long-term retention of report information.[6]

ApplicationXtender Connector[edit]

EMC ApplicationXtender Connector enables the seamless integration of business applications to ApplicationXtender—without requiring initial programming or on-going maintenance.

With ApplicationXtender Connector, employees can access information quickly and easily from virtually any business application, including Microsoft Office products, mainframe terminal emulators, and browser-based applications, to make better decisions faster and deliver higher levels of customer service.

EMC ApplicationXtender Connector delivers:

  • Point-and-click document access — Enable knowledge workers to retrieve documents and information from the ApplicationXtender repository without leaving their line-of-business applications.
  • Maximized investments — Eliminate wasteful redundancies by seamlessly integrating existing applications via ApplicationXtender Integration Module.
  • No required programming — Easily integrate with applications such as Microsoft Office products, mainframe terminal emulators, and browser-based solutions.
  • Floating icon “drop target” — Enable users to capture any value, even from within a web page, to retrieve linked information from the repository.[7]

API[edit]

ApplicationXtender Web Services (AppXtender Web Services) provides a development interface to the AppXtender content management system, allowing custom client or server components to call AppXtender functions through AppXtender Web Services. The AppXtender Web Services interface is a server side layer that brokers communication with the business logic components of an AppXtender Content Management system. Furthermore, AppXtender Web Services provides complex business logic for accessing and manipulating content through a set of APIs, each of which represent a logical and transactional operation. AppXtender Web Services offers:

  • An easy-to-use business logic layer that implements all content management related operations
  • The ability to accommodate method invocations via either remote calls
  • The ability to serve applications running on different environments and different architectures
  • User session management and software licensing

AppXtender Web Services component of AppXtender Web Services is a web service that allows AppXtender Web Services to interact dynamically with another application using SOAP-based open standards, which are executed through a series of XML function calls. AppXtender Web Services runs behind the scenes, communicating with the components of the AppXtender Content Management system. Functions are requested from a line-of-business server and sent through HTTP to the AppXtender Web Services server for processing. The AppXtender Web Services interface then sends a response to the request via HTTP to the line-of-business server, which then presents the function response to the user desktop. Each time a user logs into an AppXtender data source through AppXtender Web Services, a license or seat of AppXtender Desktop, Web, or Web Services (depending on your AppXtender Web Services configuration in AppXtender Admin) is acquired and cached until the user logs out of the AppXtender Web Services-based custom application. AppXtender Web Services is supported on the Microsoft Windows Server platform through the .NET Framework. However, AppXtender Web Services clients may operate on any platform that supports the SOAP calls.
