In their first game of the season, Doane played Morningside College, known as the Morningside Mustangs. The game was played at 7:00 P.M. in fair weather, in front of 1000 fans.[4] The Mustangs outperformed Doane all game, forcing a punt, turnover, or missed field goal on all but the final Doane drive.[4] The game started with a Doane punt, followed by 2 more punts and then a Morningside touchdown by running back Mike McNulty. The next 6 scores were touchdowns and field goals by Morningside.[4] With around 5 minutes left, Doane scored their only touchdown, a 40–yard run by Tim Reed.[4] They ended up losing 7 to 40.[4]

Doane's first win of the season came in a 36 to 10 win over Dordt. They played at home in front of 1239 fans.[5] Quarterback Anthony Dunn threw 5 touchdown passes, only one shy of the all time Doane record.[5] Although Dordt had almost twice as many rushing yards as Doane, the Tigers had almost 350 passing yards.[5] Of Doane's first 8 drives, 5 ended in touchdowns and 1 in a field goal.[5]
