A number of studies have also shown the complication of arsenic exposure on pregnancy and the fetus. Exposure has been linked to health complications for the mother and the fetus, as well as infant death due to complications. A fetal exposure to arsenic, or an exposure during early infancy has been correlated to the death of the child years later due to various health conditions that arise. These health conditions include, but are not limited to, various cancers, heart attacks, kidney failures, and complications in the lungs. These studies also showed a negative correlation between arsenic exposure and cognitive development, intelligence, and memory.

Arsenic that is naturally occurring can contaminate the soil, just as it does the groundwater. This presents a possible arsenic exposure for people who smoke products containing tobacco, because the tobacco plant grows from the soil and can become infiltrated with the arsenic.
