VulGarrity is an American rock band from Providence, Rhode Island comprised of siblings Tracy Garrity and Shawn Garrity. VulGarrity is known for their unique live performances, during which they often swap instruments and layer multiple instruments with the use of loop pedals [1]. VulGarrity has been compared to Queens of the Stone Age[2], Kiss (band)[2], The White Stripes[2] and Alice Cooper[3].

History[edit]

VulGarrity came into existence in 2008 out of the ashes of The Radionics, previously known as Rebecca Nurse. As Rebecca Nurse, the band gained notoriety in the New England music scene by opening for acts such as Mike Doughty[4] and the Misfits[3]. Tracy also won the 2006 Providence Phoenix Best Music Poll in the Best Female Vocalist category[4].

Since its inception in 2002, Rebecca Nurse rotated through several bass players including James Merida, Matt Kucharski and Brian Niedzwiadek. In 2007 Tracy added the role of bass player to her role as lead singer and the band became a three-piece. In 2008 the Garrity siblings parted ways with drummer Angelo Franco and formed VulGarrity. As a duo the band did away with defined musical roles and decided to take turns on each instrument, switching between guitar, drums, bass, keys and vocals.

After the release of their debut album "If You Sing It, They Will Hum...", aggressive touring brought the band national attention, earning them airplay on MTV’s hit shows "Made", "Cribs", "Teen Cribs" and "My Life as Liz" and invitations to share the stage with Sponge (band), Days of the New, King's X, Sleeper Agent (band) and The Joy Formidable[5]. In 2010 the band released its second album "Dance 2 The Grave", and also won the 90.7 WXIN (FM) Rock Hunt[6]. In 2011 the band won the WBRU Rock Hunt[3].

In 2011 the band starred in the "VulGarrity: The Series" web series, which featured the siblings in comical situations and showed that they don't take themselves too seriously[3].

In 2012 the band became endorsed by DigiTech[7].

Name Change[edit]

VulGarrity stated in an interview with their now label, Dog Hill Records, that they had many reasons for their name changes. One being that some people thought Rebecca Nurse was a solo act, or that Tracy's name was Rebecca Nurse. Another reasoning is that the band has gone through many changes in lineup, and in creativity.
