You may wish to complete the above messages by adding one or more of the following explanations:

• Your article contains material under copyright. You should look for alternatives which do not run up against copyright rules.
• Much of the text has simply been copied from other sources on the internet. By all means use other sources but express the ideas you find in your own words.
• The presentation is commercially oriented. Articles about products and organizations are welcome but they should be written in an objective level of language, preferably with references from outside sources.
• The article is not appropriate for inclusion in an encyclopedia. Wikipedia is not a blog allowing people to express their own ideas and interests. In general, articles should address topics of potential interest to others, not just the author's own views or original research.
• The article is self-centered. In general, you should avoid writing about yourself, your family or your place of work. People deserving a place in Wikipedia should rely on others to contribute information as objectively as possible. Try instead to write articles about other people who have gained recognition for their work or achievements.

Before you start to write an article, see if a simple Wikipedia search turns up other articles on the topic you have chosen. If so, it may be more appropriate to add content to an existing article or to restrict your new article to aspects which have not yet been covered.
• The topic lacks notability, in other words it has not received significant coverage in reliable secondary sources. Next time you begin an artilce, use Google to see if you can find hits on the topic itself or supporting information from recent news items, especially those from widely recognized newspapers or broadcasters. In some cases, it may be interesting to see if articles in other language versions of Wikipedia cover the topic.

Setting the tone

Good rules of thumb for communicating with other Wikipedians:

• Be polite and courteous.
• Explain the reason for your message in a calm, respectful tone.
• Be careful not to discourage newcomers. Encourage them to come back and write articles that will meet Wikipedia guidelines.

Wikilinking

In communicating with new Wikipedians, try to make your message as short and straightforward as possible. Avoid simply providing links to other articles, especially if they are long and complex.
