User:Crouch, Swale/NC v PT

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

How much should the actual title of an article affect primary topic determination?

In favour[edit]

  • Per WP:IAR, allows titles to be at an undisambiguated name particularly when WP:2DABPRIMARY would apply.
  • WP:SMALLDETAILS
  • Most readers probably aren't newcomers, WP is well-known and popular meaning many readers will at least have some idea of our NC (eg plurals).

Against[edit]

  • While familiarity with NC may alter PT#1, it doesn't alter PT#2.
  • Surprise of confusion will occur if someone doesn't know an article title NC (such as PLURALPT) and lands confusingly onto the wrong page.
  • SMALLDETAILS deals with situations where the names of the subjects are unique (such as Attack Attack!, American band and Attack! Attack!, Welsh band) but where confusion is likely, not in cases where a topic is known by multiple names (such as Defamation).
  • WP:PRIMARYREDIRECT explicitly states "The fact that an article has a different title is not a factor in determining whether a topic is primary.".

Discussions[edit]

Examples of this[edit]

  • Would Microsoft Windows be primary for Windows if WP used plurals for nouns? Its highly likely the part of a building would be primary and there would be a direct link for Microsoft Windows since its unlikely we would move the article to Window (structure) (or similar). Both Category:Windows and Commons:Category:Windows are about the part of a building.
  • Would Apple be about the fruit if WP used plurals for nouns? Its likely that (similar to Windows) the company would be at the base name with a direct link to the fruit.

Examples of incoming links[edit]

These are links in the article mainspace (excluding redirects and DAB pages) that there fixed, only full matches (unless there were links for a non mull match) that were on the DAB at the time of the link fix are listed.

Bray[edit]

There were over 500 mainspace links to Bray, see Talk:Bray#Requested move 24 July 2018, most were for Bray, County Wicklow (pop 32,600) but 15 were for Bray, Berkshire (pop 9,110) and a few were for other places.
