Nuria Piera Selected by Vice President Margarita Cedeño de Fernández as one of the most influential women in all of Latin America, Nuria Piera has contributed so much to the Dominican Republic's journalism landscape, however her career path isn't entirely unique[1]. Piera followed her late father José Enrique Piera Puig, into investigative journalism, and established a 53 year career of serving the public[2]. She is a pioneer in broadcast journalism for all women in not only the Dominican Rublic, but the entire Carribbean, as well as several areas of the Americas. She is now the first woman ever to direct the Cadena de Noticias, however she has also been running her own program, Color Vision for 27 years. She is a scholar in higher education and is one of the most prominent investigative journalists and television personalities in the Dominican Republic. Nuria Piera has surpassed all limits, and her work is far from done.

Personal details[edit]

Nuria Piera is the daughter of José Enrique Piera Puig and Gainza Bern. Enrique Piera was also a very influencial and controversial journalist who was actually murdered in 1970, under the government rule of Joaquin Balaguer [3][4].Piera is the mother of a girl, from her marriage to fellow journalist Pablo McKinney in 1999. Later the couple divorced. She also has a sister named Sonia, who actually works with Nuria on her television show.

Education[edit]

Nuria Piera has five degrees including a Bachelor of Law from the University of the Caribbean.[5] Piera holds a diploma of Human Rights from the Institue of Human Rights.[5] In addition she holds a degree in Marketing and Advertising from APEC University and a degree in Social Communications from the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo.[5]

Career[edit]

Piera's 53 year long journalism career was launched by her involvment in broadcast when at the young age of eight she began making appearances in seven popular programs, and staring in progams including, "The House Pequitas" and "Calentísimo 9".[5]

Investigative Journalist[edit]

She is considered by La Monde to be a famous investigative journalist who works in the TV news magazine format in the Dominican Republic.[3] In January 1987 Piera aired "Nuria at 9" which was the Dominican Republic's first social research television show. She focused on social issues and how to resolve them.[5] Piera went on to air more investigative, social research shows as well as programs with similar content as talk shows. These include, "Less Than a Meter", "Double Edged", and "The Edge of Life".[5] Due to some of the scandals that Piera has exposed, she has been harassed with death threats. She has also been sued by the Haitian president, Michel Martelly, after she revealed to the public the presidential corruption involving Hatian senator Edwin Zenny.[6] [7]

In addition to running her own program on,Nuria on Color Vision, she recentlty became the first female director of Cadena de Noticias (CDN), Canal(Channel) 37,[8] which continued as N-CDN[9] (April 3, 2013)

Dangerous Career[edit]

Despite all of the good works that Nuria Piera produces of the public, not everyone sees her work as helpful. In 2012 she recieved death threats following a report uncovering a scandal invovling illegal donationds to the canidacy for the President of Haiti, Michel Martelly [10]. Though her family was protected, it doesn't make these extreme threats any less concerning.

Notable works of journalism[edit]

Piera uncovered many scandals occuring not only in the Dominican Republic, but also across the Americas. Recently she dug up dirt about the Haitian presidential scandal involving President Michel Martelly, senator Feliy Bautista, and senator Edwin Zenny [6]. In addition Piera also uncovered a story involving missed payments to the former land owners of the Punta Perla. She has investigated many other cases in which Euclides Gutierrez, the director of the Dominican Liberation Party, is in desperation to silence.[11]
