The Pasadena Central Library is the main branch of the Pasadena Public Library system and a prominent historic landmark in the city of Pasadena, California. The building was designed by the firm of Myron Hunt and H.C. Chambers, the architects of the Huntington Library and Occidental College.[1] It was the first of the three major civic buildings making up the Pasadena Civic Center District to be completed, and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on July 28, 1980.[2] [3]

Dedicated on Lincoln’s birthday (February 12, 1927),[3] Central Library is now one of ten branches in the Pasadena library system and has been the location of several motion pictures over the years.[1] Its main entrance is on 285 East Walnut Street.

Central Library is the third of three buildings the Pasadena Public Library has occupied since its founding in 1882. The first building opened on February 26, 1884, and was located on the south side of Colorado St. between Raymond St.and Santa Fe tracks. It was moved to 42 West Dayton St. in 1886. The second building opened on September 9, 1890 and was located on the southeast corner of Walnut Street at Raymond Avenue. [3]

Architecture[edit]

The Children's Wing was originally named the "Peter Pan Room" after its fireplace depicting the characters of J. M. Barrie, designed by Pasadena sculptor Maud Daggett. [3]

Growth and renovation[edit]

In the 1960s, the building was expanded to include two reference wings and a children’s Story Hour Room.

Between 1984 and 1990, Central Library underwent historically sensitive restoration and renovation. A new North Entrance and two floors for circulating books were constructed. Its interior...
