Next map

I was wondering what state park map to work on next (I know, World's End awaits). One thought I had was a single map for both Colton Point and Leanard Harrison - what do you think? Another way to ask this is which article do you want to work on improving after WESP? Ruhrfisch ><>°° 21:10, 8 May 2008 (UTC)

    • So far I have thought of adding the date for the Loyalsock Trail, found some info on the kayak races in the park on the Loyalsock, and found a pay only ref on the date of the new ranger station - first flush toilets in the park. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 20:07, 9 May 2008 (UTC)

Worlds End State Park questions

Hi Dinch, I think I have expanded the History section about as much as can be done with the refs I was able to find. I have a couple of questions. I cannot find any mention of the whitewater slalom races on the web post 2005. I also do not find anything that says the races have ended, but it seems like they might have. Barring a WP:RS though I am not sure how to include this in the article. I also note that in Black Mo, we included the 20 Must See parks in the History section. Here it is in Recreation. I actually found that the 20 must see parks first went on the web in 2004 here. Do you think I should move this? If so I can add a different intro to recreation. I also combined Horse trails and Lumber era as the Horse trails was only one paragraph long - does this seem OK? I added a bit on the family cabins sizes - tried to make it not like a travel brochure. I kind of worry that the chapel services are held elsewhere in case of rain may be seen as too brochure-y, but we can wait for Peer Review comments if you want. Finally, I note that the structure of Black Mo after History (2 Geology and climate, 3 Ecology, 4 Recreation) is much different than that of Worlds End (3 Natural history, 3.1 Wildlife, 3.2 Geology and fossils, 4 Recreation). I will work on Geology and climate next - what do you think of making a section on that, followed by an ecology section with plats and animals? Ruhrfisch ><>°° 21:07, 12 May 2008 (UTC)

OK, I will work on a certain covered bridge next and then on the Geology, fossils, and climate section. Plus the never ending Peer Review backlog calls. I forgot to order the official NRHP nomination form for the bridge until today - the other two Lycoming Co. covered bridges nom forms online have some more info, so I want to wait until I get that before going to FAC. It might take a few days or it might take a week, so I am fine with going to PR now. I think you are not supposed to have two noms at FAC at the same time, but I wouldn't want that anyway. Cogan House Covered Bridge

Thanks for the heads up - I think I fixed the missing refs and end of the article problem. I will also add a bit about how to get to the bridge (I have driven right past the turnoff a few times - it is not well marked). I have a fair amount of material still to add - more on the 1998 rehab, some more details on the structure, an incident in 2000 when a propane truck going to the hunting camp damaged it and it had to be repaired again. One of the refs in Worlds End is not working - natural history or wildlife. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 00:23, 14 May 2008 (UTC)

Forgot to say that it used to be spelled "English Centre" in the 19th century and the name switched to "English Center" at some point. Since it is not central to the article, I just changed them all to English Center to match the map. Thanks for catching that.
As for getting there (more detail than waranted in the article) you can get to PA 184 from Route 15 (turn west at Fry's Turkey Ranch) or from PA 287 (turn east at Brookside) and go 3.1 miles to T784 (from Evans' book) then south.

Worlds End PR

Looks good - I added the topic (geography). I heard back from the NRHP already and they do not have anything on the bridge that is not already online, so I am going to submit to FAC later today. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 20:01, 22 May 2008 (UTC)

Glad to help - I made stubs for the other two covered bridges (will expand Buttonwood for a DYK idea) and will nominate later this evening. I am a bit nervous as I do not know that much about bridges compared to creeks (or have an expert on hand like you for state parks). Looking at the WESP lead it seems simpler than the Black Mo lead - not sure if that is a good thing or not. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 21:03, 22 May 2008 (UTC)
The FAC is in, I found a typo in the PR and fixed it, and Michael Devore has found several typos in Worlds End and the bridge. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 04:37, 23 May 2008 (UTC)
The DYK has to do with the fact that in the flood of 1889 the bridge was washed off its abutments, floated downstream to a field and was then taken apart, transported in pieces back to the site and reassembled there. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 14:18, 23 May 2008 (UTC)
Now to find the time to expand the article. I have four different reliable sources forthe Buttonwood bridge that give four different dates for its construction. I added some pics and tweaked the lead and fishing sections per the PR - hope the changes are OK. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 20:09, 23 May 2008 (UTC)

The concern is more with self-published work, I think. The Lycoming County Historical Museum was renamed for Taber, and he was profiled in the local Sun-Gazette newspaper recently, so I think he is OK as a source. The trail ref is non-controversial (dates of the trail) so I think using the club's webpage is OK - I do not own the LT Guide book (yet). Ruhrfisch ><>°° 05:11, 25 May 2008 (UTC)

We do not have any pics of animals - the new visitor center has stuffed dead animals, but I did not photograph them and don't really want taxidermy pics as wildlife images. My "read out loud" copyedits on Worlds End are done. Please check - I tried to combine some short sentences and reword a few things to make the flow better per Jackyd101's comments. I took out Williamsport sawmills as the Loyalcock is downstream of their locations. I added the DCNR 20 Must see sentence to the lead like Black Mo has (which was a FAC request). I have two more question (plus I need to make the very stubby Huntley Mountain formation article). 1) Do you want to separate the park map from the Geobox (as was done with Black Mo in FAC)? If so I would put it in the Name section. 2) The MOS recommends not having photos on the left side under level three headers. Right now a few are - I like alternating left and right photos, but can move them all right if you think it best (or we can just wait and do it in FAC if requested to).
Glad you like the new Hyner View pic - I had seen a hang glider pic at the park on Flickr sometime ago and your find of the new Worlds End photo inspired me to upload it, but it was already on Commons (I added it to the park's cat). I did find the paraglider and uploaded that - I think it is a nicer picture and shows the river and forests too. When do youwant to nominate for FAC? I would mention the model of Black Mo. I have to make a map for Jackyd101 and may ask him to take another look when that is done. The DCNR page usually says how big the maps are (in KB) - a bot fixed the Black Mo map link recently so that is probably the model to use (and I did not for the Hyners). I just changed Worlds End - here is the page for it that shows the size [2]. I note Worlds End also has official campground and cabins maps - are these worth adding as External links too? DYK is backlogged, so I have time to add more pix and a Geobox to all three. I made a roadtrip and got more pix of all three. I have looked at the Worlds End refs fairly carefully twice now and cannot find the duplicate ref (although some of the External links to maps are refs).   • Yes, I read the legal regs for PA state parks recently and not hunting groundogs was the first point under hunting. I saw one at Black Mo a few times and even got a pic of it under a cabin. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 03:13, 4 June 2008 (UTC)
    • I was planning on adding the Antes School pic anyway - thanks. Do you like the new Geobox pic? I am not done uploading - I have all of the Maintenance District buildings, several more cabin shots, a nice shot of a family of Canada geese that I may put in the IBA section (perhaps move the lake pic there up to Geology then), a salamander in the lake, some trails (inlcuding the Hay Road and a sign for the Ski Slope Trail), and a few replacement pics - essentially the same shot, but sunnier / greener. Bridges

OK, the GA nom for Forksville is in and the DYK triple nom is in. I need to go to the library for more sources for all three, and need to do some more expansion work on Hillsgrove and especially Sonestown (which needs a Geobox still).   • Good news on the pics - I have three of Hillsgrove Covered Bridge on Commons so far (each a panorama). More to follow, Ruhrfisch ><>°° 01:28, 10 June 2008 (UTC)
    • Thanks for working on it - the Fair Play Men did not make it very far north, I doubt they got more than a few miles north of the West Branch. There was a native path up Pine Creek and the lumber rafts down it, then the railroad, now the rail trail. I have the Ecological History of the Pine Creek Gorge book and the West Rim trail guide gives lots of information on plants. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 23:02, 17 June 2008 (UTC)
      • I also worry they will be fairly similar, but there are things on the West Rim (West Rim trail) not on the east and vice versa (CCC worker statue). We can always do one first then see about the other. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 23:37, 17 June 2008 (UTC)

Millersburg Ferry

I am surprised it is not yet on Wikipedia, glad you are adding it. There must be an infobox for it somewhere (Ferry or NRHP). ALthough I have driven past the sign many times, I have never stopped to see it or ride it or even get a picture. Possible DYK from the lead, something along the lines DYK ... that the Millersburg Ferry in Pennsylvania is the last ferry on the Susquehanna River and the last authentic stern-wheeled paddle wheeler operating in the United States? I have all of the Forksville pics on COmmons and will add them to the bridge article (which is pretty much done - feedack welcome) next. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 01:23, 12 June 2008 (UTC)

I just updated the PR backlog, so still have not added new pics to Forksville. There are now 12 of the bridge on Commons. When I looked at the Ferry article the lead repeated the ownsership - I figured you were still working on it, so did not fix it. Maybe I can make it to the ferry one of these weeks. I just tweaked the article and hook so it read "wooden double stern-wheel paddle boat" which is the wording used in the brochure. The covered bridges made it to the expiring noms before they got into DYK. I think it will be OK. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 17:04, 18 June 2008 (UTC)

Forksville Covered Bridge

Thanks for the review comments - I have fixed both. The article just said Lewis was from Hillsgrove, but the link was to the township anyway. Thanks too for the typo catch on Sonestown and the triple congrats - it was not the pictured slot and the articles got no edits despite being on the main page (a first). Glad you had a nice day - I am about ready to expand Sonestown and Hillsgrove and was looking at a 1934 Souvenir of Hillsgrove I found and it mentioned the bridge as being in the township, so I did what I should have done at first and checked the maps.   • Well the criteria (given at Wikipedia:Featured topic criteria) is that 20% are Featured and the rest are Good articles or, if they are very short (i.e. Benjamin Rush) have had a peer review and been checked for completeness. There also has to be a lead article - for Must See Parks I am not sure if that could be the List of PA State Parks or not. 21 Must See parks would need 5 FAs and the rest GAs. 120 state parks (plus the list) would need 24 FAs and the rest GAs or checked. Thank you for the comments. One question, do you think if the square thumbnails were made slightly larger, say 125 or 150 pixels instead of 100, that the sense of distortion would be less? PS I found the Hillsgrove Covered Bridge is really in Hillsgrove Twp, not Elkland (two sources wrong, but PennDOT map, USGS topo map, and NBI all agree it is in Hillsgrove.

I was looking on the NY Times to see if I could find his obituary, but I did not find it. I would tweak the DYK slightly, but it is similar to what I was thinking of (scientist and naturalist). The tweak is that he did not invent the process by which Corelle was made, just the furnace that made it possible for Corning to make it. How about Did you know that...Frank W. Preston invented the furnace which made Corelle glassware possible and worked to establish Moraine State Park in Pennsylvania? I also note the years of his birth are inconsistent in the article.   • I did find several good refs in the NYT for Colton Point and Leonard Harrison, and they even mentioned Upper Pine Bottom once! Looking for CCC stuff for Worlds End I found that there had been a CCC camp in the WDHC watershed, 5 miles west of Elimsport. Found it yesterday too - helps that put a new sign up marking the spot, as not much beyond some concrete foundations are left and those are so overgrown they are hard to see. Bridges Geobox Problem

Finetooth noticed a problem with Geobox River about the same time, which has also been resolved without any action on his part. I did not see the problems. My guess is there was either Geobox vandalism or a good faith code change that had unintended consequences, or perhaps something with the Wiki software (Peer Review was truncated a while ago because of that). Johnny Reder

Hi Dincher, if you check this link [3], which is referenced in article, it lists Reder as a Crosscutters player. I know the Williamsport Crosscutters article says the team was formed in 1994.     • Hi Dincher, I am not a baseball fan really, I only came across Reder as a soccer player. I don’t really feel qualified to write articles on baseball teams. That said I have started an article on Williamsport Grays based on this source [4] which seems to be part of the Wiki family. I do know that American clubs in all sports regularly change name and this can lead to confusion. This source [5] agrees with you and says Reder played for the Grays. Bills

Hi Dinch, I did not have internet access for a day or so (just got back on) and have limited access for the next day. I like the DYK idea, but would make it clearer they were a baseball team. Perhaps DYK... that former members of the minor league Williamsport Bills include World Series mananger Clint Hurdle, all-star Tino Martinez and Dave Bresnahan who threw a potato instead of a baseball into left field? Dear Chugga, I am answering on Dincher's behalf and will copy this to your talk page too. My first suggestion to you is to carefully read WP:CIVIL as well as WP:NPA. Your message is not civil and the comment on Dincher's intelligence is a personal attack (as it is a negative comment on the editor and not the content). Stop this now.
My second suggestion to you is to learn to read more carefully in general. Dincher is away for a few days (as it clearly says at the top of his talk and user pages if you would read them carefully). If you would read the article more carefully, you would see that the article says the park is in New Castle County, Delaware (which is true), not the city of New Castle, Delaware (which it is not, as you so loudly pointed out above). The USGS GNIS entry for the park shows the county it is in as New Castle here. USGS topographic maps show the park and the two lakes here, northeast of Wilmington. The US Census map service shows the same two lakes in its maps and clearly they are outside of the political boundaries of the city of Wilmington and the town of Bellefonte, see here. The postal address of the park is Wilmington, but as far as the political jurisdiction, it appears to be unincorporated New Castle County.
Third, there is no requirement I am aware of on Wikipedia that questions must be answered or that forbids users from clearing their talk pages of unwanted messages. I note that you blanked your own page today. I guess it is OK for you to remove unwanted messages, but not for others to do the same?
Finally, I am going to copy the location portion of this message to the park's talk page. If you would still like to discuss this, please do so there.
