K3 started as a band with female twenty-somethings as their target audience, something that can be noted from their early song lyrics. Their first single, "Wat ik wil" (What I want), was however not very successful. In 1999 K3 participated in the pre-selections for the Belgian entry for the Eurovision Song Contest, with the song "Heyah mama". The song was not well received by one of the judges, Marcel Vanthilt, who referred to the girls as assorted meat products. Notwithstanding, "Heyah Mama" was released as a single and became the first big hit for the girl band. The song remained at the number one spot of the Flemish Ultratop 50 chart for 16 weeks and would eventually be listed in the chart for 34 weeks. Their next two singles also reached the number one position, resulting in a uninterrupted period of 32 weeks that a K3 song was at the top of the chart.

Since 2000 the band is managed by Studio 100, a Flemish television production company for Dutch and Belgian children's programs.

K3 became famous in Flanders and one year later also the Netherlands. Songs like "Heyah Mama", "I love you baby", "Alle Kleuren" (All colours), "Blub, ik ben een vis!" (Blub I am a fish), "Tele-Romeo", "Toveren" (Do magic), "Verliefd" (In love), "De 3 biggetjes" (The three piglets), "Oya lélé", "Hart verloren" (heart lost), "Liefdeskapitein" (Captain of love), "Kuma He", "Ya Ya Yippee", "Dokter Dokter" (Doctor doctor) and "Kusjesdag" (Day of kisses) were big hits for the three singers. K3 has released eight albums. Their eighth album Ya Ya Yippee sold more than 50,000 copies in pre-sales within the Benelux.

In 2002 the album Tele-Romeo was also recorded in English, French and German. In May 2007 Studio 100 launched a similar band in Germany called WIR 3, which is the German version of K3. They sing songs that are translations of K3 songs; their first single is called "Heyah Mama". This band also has one red head, one brunette and one blonde.

On 10 June 2006 a party was held at Plopsaland to celebrate the tenth anniversary of Studio 100. At this occasion the girls opened the K3 Museum. This museum provides an overview of the career of K3. There are interviews, clothes and props from the films to be seen, among which the air scooters of the film K3 en het Magische Medaillon (K3 and the magic medallion). Also the many gold and platinum discs can be seen.

K3 presents a television program for children called De wereld van K3 (The world of K3). Originally there were Dutch and Flemish versions, but currently only the Dutch version remains.

The band have released several DVDs.

In 2007 a team from Madame Tussauds in London took measurements of the band members for wax works statues. These wax works have been unveiled by K3 in Amsterdam on 4 July 2007.

Films

K3 have also appeared in several films. In 2004 they released their first film K3 en het Magische Medaillon (K3 and the magic medallion). The film premièred on 29 September 2004 and received favourable reviews. In the film famous local television personality Paul de Leeuw plays the stark raving mad genie.

In 2006 the second film, K3 en het IJsprinsesje (K3 and the little ice princess), was released. In this fairy tale film Carry Tefsen plays the witch in the pancake house, Peter Faber plays the king and famous Belgian comedian Urbanus plays the wizard. More than half a million people came to see the film in the cinemas in Belgium and the Netherlands.

In 2007 the third film, K3 en de Kattenprins (K3 and the feline prince), will be released. It will be in the cinemas December 2007.

Musicals

K3 have performed in several musicals. In Doornroosje (Sleeping Beauty) they play the three good fairies and in De 3 biggetjes (The three piglets) they play the eponymous three piglets, Knirrie (Verbeke), Knarrie (Damen) and Knorrie (Aerts). Of the three band members, Aerts has the most musical experience. She was the stand-in for the title role in the musical Sneeuwwitje (Snow White) and during the pregnancy of Verbeke Aerts played the title role in De kleine zeemeermin (The Little Mermaid). In 2007 K3 reprised their roles in De 3 biggetjes when it was staged again. From February till May 2008 Verbeke will perform in the musical Pinokkio (Pinocchio) as Nina de Ballerina, the title character's conscience.

Non-K3 projects

Aerts has performed in several non-K3 musicals. Verbeke will do so in 2008. Damen plays a PE teacher in the television series Anubis for the Dutch Nickelodeon channel.
