Ossie Clark[edit]

Ossie Clark (Born in 9 June 1942 – 6 August 1996) in Warrington. He was a English Fashion Designer who major figure in the Swinging Sixties scene in London and the fashion industry in that era. His family moved to Oswaldtwistle during the war, Hence nickname is "Ossie". Ossie Clark then attended the Royal College of Art in London and achieved a first-class degree in 1965. At that time Ossie degree fashion shown at RCA was a success. His design style was heavily influenced by pop art and Hollywood glamour.

Young Ossie would make clothes for his nieces and nephews. He practiced tailoring clothing on his dolls and designed swimsuits for the neighborhood girls when not yet 10 years old. At the age 13 he study architecture in school and would later go on to use all of these to great effect in his fashion designs. At age 16 Clark attended Regional College of Art. He had to wake up early in the morning make the long trip from home to college everyday. At that time his mom would give him prescribed pills to keep him awake. When Clark was attending Regional College of Art, he was introduced to Celia Birtwell by a closed friend Mo McDermott. They both started as good friend and ended up into a love affair. Clark also became friends with David Hockney at that time. They both went on a trip to New York City, when they were in college. They were rumors to have been lovers just because they made connections into fashion. Clark graduated from the Regional College of Art in 1958. Then Clark attended the Royal College of Art in London and achieved a first-class degree in 1965. During that time Celia Birtwell went with Clark to live with him. His fashion design was influenced by Pop Art and Hollywood glamour. In August he had his first feature in British Vogue.

Career[edit]

Ossie Clark began to make his mark in the fashion industry, with Alice Pollock's featuring his designs in 1966. Clark design so many things he would design shoes, paper dresses, and snakeskin jackets. Clark and his partner Alice Pollock were good at creating images but they were not good in managing a business. In 1967 Clark presented his first fashion show the patronage of Radley at Chelsea Town Hall. He showed his first collection in London Berkeley Square. During that time, Clark was not popular in London nor New York and Paris. But he was accepted by popular performers and actors which gave him the advantage to dress rich and famous people. Clark made many stage costumes for Mick Jagger, the Beatles, Marianne Faithfull and Liza Minnelli. In 1969, Clark married Celia Birtwell in 1969 and they had two sons, name Albert and George. His career was going great but at the same time it was not. It was like a hill going up and down, which made him stress out and take drugs. His drugs are starting to be more impacted on his emotional that lead to divorce. Clark and Celia separated in the 1970s. The affect of the divorce started to bring him down not only that but from the separation from Birtwell and his two children, not allowing him to recover. In 1977 Clark went to business with Tony Calder and Peter Lee, for two years had a huge success in the fashion shows. On January 1978, Clark met his long-term partner, Nicholas Balaban. But Clark behavior led the relationship end in 1983. He later got depressed which made him more obsessed over Balaban.

Death[edit]

Ossie Clark die at 54 yrs old on 6 August 1996. He was stabbed to death in his council at Kensington and Chelsea. Diego Cogolato 28 yr old Italian, his former lover was the one who killed Clark and was sent to jail for six years.
