Antboy is a 2013 Danish live-action superhero film directed by Ask Hasselbalch set in modern-day Denmark. The screenplay was written by Anders Ølholm and adapted from the first three comic book volumes of the same name by Kenneth Bøgh Andersen. The titular role is portrayed by Oscar Dietz, while the film's antagonist, The Flea (translated from the Swedish Loppa), is portrayed by Nicolas Bro.

The film gained world premiere at the Canadian Film Festival TIFF[1] and won its premiere at the Buster Film Festival before it was released in Danish cinemas on October 3, 2013.

The film is considered by some as Denmark's first superhero film, despite Birger Larsen's 2009 movie Superbror. The film received largely positive reviews before being released abroad in the US.

Production for Antboy began in October 2012 [1] and the production drew headlines, including because of the cost budget, because the title character's costume is the most expensive costume in Danish film history with a budget of 250,000 kroner. [7] The film was also known as the first Danish-produced superhero film, despite Birger Larsen's family movie Superbror from 2009, also about a young boy who got super powers.

Antboy was released on 3 October 2013 in the Denmark and on 16 April 2014 worldwide. May 13, 2013, even before the release of the film, Ølholm announced via Twitter that he had begun the manuscript for Antboy's, which as was eventually released in 2014.

Critics were generally positive. Since then, two sequels were released as part of a trilogy: Antboy: Revenge of the Red Fury in 2014 and Antboy 3 in 2016.

Box office[edit]

Critical reception[edit]

After the film premiered in Toronto on September 2013, Maria Månson from the Film Company called, among other things, the film " charming, well-screwed and really nice to watch " and "the best Danish children's film for years" and rewarded it with five stars out of six. [4] Some critics were, however, less excited Jakob Stegelmann at the film magazine Ekko gave the film three out of six stars, which he reasoned that " the Danish children's film's themes and aesthetics are simply not so terrifying a mix as one believed. " [5]
