RJ Onyx Moonshadow (born Ryan Nicholas Jean; 1 March 1983) is an individualist. People find him intelligent, entertaining, and optimistic. He uses a wheelchair, but does not consider himself as disabled. He just does things in a different way. It does not prevent him from going after his goals and dreams. He's certainly capable of doing anything anybody else can do. He's had an interest in many academic subjects. He started teaching himself computers and web design in middle and high school, and in college, he studied physics, graphic design, video production, and mathematics. After college, he began working at a local comic book store. This gave him the advantage of opening his social life as he started mingling with creative, unique people who have the same interests as him. Then he worked with computers at an advocacy organization for people with disabilities for nearly a decade. Even though he's always been a naturalist, since the beginning of the millennium, he has put more focus in studying and learning of the metaphysical world and has become a spiritual leader in the process. His chosen path has, is, and will always be Wicca and definitely not ashamed of who he is. Since finishing his third book, he has decided to continue his college education. He enjoys what he does, what he has accomplished, and there's plenty more to do in this lifetime and the next.
Personal life[edit]
Name[edit]
Ryan Nicholas Jean was born to the unwed high school sweethearts Yvette Jean and Raymond Smuzeski, Jr. in Flint, Michigan, in 1983. His mother intended to name him Nicholas John Jean; John being his grandfather's first name, but decided otherwise. Instead, he was named for all of the names beginning with an “R” in the Smuzeski family. His mother gave him her last name. On his birth certificate, his middle name was incorrectly spelled Nicolaus, but was changed almost immediately.
In 2003, he became friends with Townsend Coleman, voice of Michaelangelo from the cartoon series Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1987). Coleman gave him the nickname RJ and it stuck ever since. He has always felt like a protector, one who assists others, as he did through his daily positive messages. Black onyx offers protection so he added Onyx to the name. Being Wiccan, he worships the Goddess and the Moon represents the Goddess. The bible of the Wiccan religion is often referred to as the Book of Shadows. As an empath, he resonates with shadow work and he does his best work at night, in the shadows. He combined these two words into Moonshadow and added it to the name as well to form his magickal name RJ Onyx Moonshadow.
Disabilities[edit]
Starting from the moment he was born, he has been diagnosed with several disabilities. The first was his cleft lip & palate. This birth defect caused the roof of his mouth to be split apart as well as abnormalities to his nose. As time passed, this was corrected with multiple surgeries and has left scars to his upper lip. Six months after being born, he was diagnosed with cerebral palsy, a disorder which, in his case, prevented him from walking and included limited movement in his left arm. It wasn’t until 2000 when he started having seizures and they have been controlled since. They stopped occurring in 2005 until he unexpectedly had one in November 2015. Even though he takes medication to suppress them, he still has one approximately every year and a half.
Relocation[edit]
In 1991, he moved to Atlanta, Georgia, along with his mother. There, he took on new opportunities available to him and attended a few of the greatest educational institutions in the state where he studied both science and art. In 2005, he moved back to his hometown and began broadening his horizons by taking on multiple jobs and meeting new people who shared in his passion, becoming a social butterfly. He returned to Atlanta, Georgia, in the summer of 2016 in order to pursue studying astrophysics at Georgia Institute of Technology that fall.
Studies[edit]
Ever since he was a child, he always felt that he was unique; not only because he was diagnosed with a disability, but because he is attuned with nature and been attracted to animals, plants, and the world around him. He began gaining any knowledge he could about the wonders of the universe. He wanted to be a zoologist, physicist, and cosmologist at different times in his life.
Philosophy[edit]
Religion[edit]
During his intricate studies, he found a religion that correlated with his own belief system, Wicca. Since he already felt that he was a practitioner of magick and knew most of the lifestyle, he considered himself Wiccan from that point on. Since that time, he has been concentrating on learning more about the history of Wicca, its practices, how to incorporate it more into his life, and how it connects with the universe. Along his journey, he has met incredible people who have the same beliefs and willing to share knowledge together, building a huge circle of friends and family. This has assisted him in becoming spiritual and has placed him in a mental, physical, and emotional positive state. He wishes to spread positive messages to everyone increasing their knowledge so that they too can embrace the magick of positive energy.
Lifestyle[edit]
He looks up to those who have ambitions and goals and have the drive and motivation to achieve them. Also, those who are open-minded and free-spirited. Those who speak their mind, be themselves, and are not ashamed of who they truly are. They do not let the outside world bring them down, no matter what. He always loves meeting people who can educate him and he can educate. He also likes to meet people who are open-minded and share his common interests, such as art, spirituality, the egalitarian philosophy, Wicca, and the free-spirited lifestyle.
Relationships[edit]
He has been in two serious relationships. The first started in August 1994, shortly after having a lengthy conversation with her on the last day of summer camp. She ended the relationship in August 1995 while they were attending camp. During camp in August 1996, the two agreed to date again but she ended the relationship a month later. That December, he went over to her house to exchange gifts. The two agreed to date once again. She didn’t attend camp the following July, but while there, he had an extensive conversation with another girl who was a former grade school classmate. The next morning, the two began dating and when camp was over, he ended his relationship with his first girlfriend. In October 2001, however, he ended the relationship with his second girlfriend. Following the move to his hometown, the two agreed to date again in August 2007. A year later, they moved in together. In March 2010, the two mutually decided to end the relationship and she moved out.

Was asked to appear in the 2007 remake of Revenge of the Nerds (before it was shelved) after writing a script called Revenge of the Nerds V: Nerds of the Millenium in 2001. Later in 2001, he rewrote his script into a short film entitled Nerds, Geeks, & Dorks and filmed it at Chamblee High School that same year. It can be seen on YouTube, along with "The Making of Nerds, Geeks, & Dorks" video. In 2013, submitted an application and audition video to be on the second season of reality television series King of the Nerds, produced and hosted by two actors from the Revenge of the Nerds franchise, Robert Carradine and Curtis Armstrong, but unfortunately was not chosen. He met these two at the 2013 Motor City Comic Con in Novi, Michigan.
Aided in the production of the short film The Retreat released in 2003 by converting a video file for a scene.
Assisted in editing a fan-film parody sequel of the four films Batman, Batman Returns, Batman Forever, and Batman & Robin entitled Batman and Robin Return Forever Again: The Movie: Part One that was produced direct-to-DVD in 2004.
Wrote a sequel to the 2003 film Freddy vs. Jason entitled Freddy Becomes Jason in 2004, years before the comic book series sequel Freddy vs. Jason vs. Ash: The Nightmare Warriors was published.

Started a short-lived blog in 2008 called Individualists Are One on Blogspot where he presented his thoughts on debatable topics, such as individualism, interdependence, egalitarianism, spirituality, and life under the moniker The Evanescent Man, a take on his favorite band Evanescence. Once he joined Facebook in 2009, he began to post his messages there instead and developed The Light of Magick.
Interviewed in 2009 for a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles documentary entitled Turtle Power: The Definitive History of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles which was eventually released on DVD and Digital HD on August 12, 2014, but unfortunately, footage from his interview was not used in the documentary.
Wrote a sequel Saw F8te to continue the Saw film series in 2011. It was submitted to Sean Patrick Flanery, who portrayed Bobby Dagen in Saw 3D, during the 2012 Motor City Comic Con and to Cary Elwes, who played Dr. Lawrence Gordon in both Saw and Saw 3D, during the 2013 Motor City Comic Con. In 2017, an eighth installment of the franchise was made entitled Jigsaw, but had nothing to do with his Saw F8te screenplay. A spin-off film of the franchise entitled Spiral was released in 2021; however, this too, had nothing to do with his screenplay. A tenth installment was released entitled Saw X in 2023, but yet again, was not connected to his screenplay, as it was set between the events of Saw and Saw II.
Hosted, edited, directed, and produced a short-lived web series Comic Relief On Air which lasted three episodes and can be seen on UStream.tv.
After watching Robert X. Cringely's documentary film Triumph of the Nerds: The Rise of Accidental Empires and its sequel Nerds 2.0.1: A Brief History of the Internet along with coinciding drama films Pirates of Silicon Valley, The Social Network, and Jobs in 2013, contacted and suggested to Bob Cringely to co-create a third documentary film Nerds 3.0.1: Generation Social Network with him. Nothing came into fruition unfortunately.
On March 22, 2016, recorded himself riding in his wheelchair from E Paces Ferry to the Lindbergh MARTA Station in Atlanta, Georgia and back. This video entitled "Accessibility in Mind" can be seen on YouTube, which was edited and posted on April 7, 2016.
On September 14, 2016, met Sal Barone, who played D.J. Conner in the pilot episode of Roseanne, and is now a mathematics professor at Georgia Institute of Technology.
Had the opportunity on November 29, 2016, to speak over the phone with Renée Coleman, who portrayed Alia, "The Evil Leaper", on Quantum Leap. She now holds a doctorate in mythological studies and interested in metaphysics, specifically dream analysis.
Created a website called JeanOmniverse.com on November 17, 2017, where he intends to share his knowledge and abstracts of his projects regarding his studies in astrophysics, quantum physics, cosmology, and mathematics.
On July 13, 2019, met his childhood heroes and friends of then 16 years, voice actors of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1987): Cam Clarke, Barry Gordon, Rob Paulsen, and Townsend Coleman, who portrayed Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael, and Michaelangelo, respectively, at the Atlanta Comic Con. He saw them again three years later at the Retro-Toy Con in Greenville, South Carolina, which occurred from November 18 to 20, 2022. He saw them once again, minus Rob Paulsen due to a family emergency, from September 1 to 3, 2023, at the Fan Boy Expo Orlando in Orlando, Florida.

The Light of Magick contributions[edit]
Published his first book Awakening to the Light of Magick under his magickal name on November 28, 2013, featuring a year of messages he wrote from 2012 to 2013 in order to send out positive energy and give insight to its readers. In January 2014, he created an ad for his book which can be seen on YouTube and TheLightofMagick.com.
Interviewed by fellow spiritual leader and life coach Teal Swan for her Ask Teal web series on an episode entitled "Disabilities" discussing the topic of disabilities, how to cope with them, and looking at them from a new perspective on March 4, 2014. It aired on March 8, 2014, and can be seen on YouTube and TheLightofMagick.com. Following this video, he created his own The Light of Magick bi-weekly web series discussing various topics on his YouTube channel beginning on March 11, 2014. The episode guide can be found in the "Web series" section of this page. It was decided that after season two finale, which aired on February 24, 2016, the series will go on hiatus until further notice.
Interviewed by fellow spiritualist and radio talk show host Linda Chasteen for an episode of Holding the Light entitled "Magick in the Light – The Power of Positivity" discussing his spirituality and religion, his different abilities (opposed to disabilities), and his book Awakening to the Light of Magick on July 21, 2014. It aired on September 12, 2014, and can be heard on Intention Radio.
Interviewed by journalist and photographer Brian Thornton for an article in Modern Model Magazine entitled "The Magickal Journey to Yourself" discussing his spirituality and aspirations, overcoming his disabilities, and his book Awakening to the Light of Magick on August 10, 2014. It was published on September 24, 2014, and can be read on pages 30 & 31 in the September 2014 issue at ModernModelMagazine.com.
Published his second book Unlocking the Light of Magick on November 27, 2014, featuring another year of messages he wrote from 2013 to 2014 continuing to enlighten its readers with positive energy and deep insights.

During the 2015 Motor City Comic Con, he met and became friends with actress Jodi Lyn O'Keefe, as he loves her portrayal of Isabella in the Two and a Half Men episode "Hi, Mr. Horned One". He gave her his two books and a shirt with his Eternal Love Ankh symbol. The two wore the shirts for a professional photo, which can be seen on his website "TheLightofMagick" Portal. A video was also recorded of her unveiling a heart bracelet from him, which can be seen on YouTube. Days later, on May 20, 2015, a page dedicated to him entitled "Jodi Lyn O’Keefe RJ Onyx Moonshadow Motor Comic Con" was created on her official website JodiLynOKeefe.com, featuring all of the photos and the video of the two together from the convention. The very next day, the video was posted on the homepage of the Jodi Lyn O'Keefe Daily website, and some of the photos were placed on the Gallery page of the website.
On May 25, 2015, during meditation, a poem came to him in which he entitled "Who Am I?". Five days later, he recited this poem in a video that can be seen on YouTube.
In August 2015, he aided in the production of the independent metaphysical film Those Who Seek, co-produced by his friend and horror film actress Melantha Blackthorne, who portrayed Zaah of Orion in the film. His name appeared in the credits. It was released on May 7, 2017, and can be seen on YouTube.
On November 25, 2015, posted an "Out of the Shadows" video discussing his experience of having a seizure on November 7, 2015, over ten years since his previous one, and the aftermath struggle of a fractured left femur near the hip that can be seen on YouTube.
Published his third book Exploring the Light of Magick on November 26, 2015, featuring yet another year of messages he wrote from 2014 to 2015 continuing to expand the minds of its readers with positive energy and profound understandings of the universe, including his ideas in the fields of astrophysics, quantum physics, and cosmology.

On March 1, 2016, posted a "Journey to the Cosmos" video, which serves as a sequel to his "Out of the Shadows" video, discussing leaving his job and intentions on moving back to Atlanta, Georgia, that summer in order to study astrophysics, quantum physics, and cosmology at Georgia Institute of Technology in the fall. On June 1, 2016, concluded his story arc by posting an "Unplugging from the Matrix" video, directly following his "Out of the Shadows" and "Journey to the Cosmos" videos. In this conclusion, he discusses how he previously attended Georgia Institute of Technology, but felt unprepared at the time and feels much more confident now, after experiencing everything he has since.
