Dragalia Lost[edit]

Dragalia Lost, developed by Cygames, is a mobile game RPG that focuses on online cooperative play in order to complete objectives. The game is updated every couple of weeks with bug fixes, new adventurers, and new events.

Main Characters[edit]

The main character, Euden by default but can be changed by the player, is the seventh heir of the Alberian royal family.[1] He has the ability to transform into dragons after forging a dragonpact. He shares this ability with the rest of the people in the Haildom, a separate kingdom from Alberia created after Zethia makes enemies with Euden, due to those with the blood of the royal family allowing others to shape-shift.

Zethia, one of Euden's sisters as well as his twin, is a maiden of the Church of Alberia.[2] Zethia turns against Euden and the rest of his crew in Chapter 5 of the main campaign.

Elisanne is a knight of the Ilian Church and bears the title of Paladyn. However, after leaving the church, she was considered a heretic and is chased after as a result. A main quirk of her's is that she enjoys cute things, but tries to hide this fact.[3]

Adventurers[edit]

The playable characters in the game are referred to as adventurers and are split up into elements and weapons types. The elements consist of Water, Wind, Fire, Light, and Shadow. The weapons that adventurers can wield are Swords, Blades, Daggers, Axes, Lances, Bows, Wands, and Staffs.

Development[edit]

Dragalia Lost's initial director, Hiroki Matsuura, transferred the title to Yuji Okada, CEO of BlazeGames, on July 4, 2019, about 10 months into Dragalia Lost's lifespan.[4] An interview with Okada was done in September 2019, where Okada notes that he would like to add more content as well as make game-play as smooth as possible among other things.[5]

Music[edit]

On October 19, 2019, the album DAOKO x Dragalia Lost was released to celebrate the first anniversary of the game. A limited edition version was released which contained a second disc with 5 bonus songs sung by in game characters. Limited editions also included a 60-page booklet with in game as well as concept art. The limited edition also included an application ticket that rewarded the player with in game rewards.[6]

Game Content[edit]

The game is updated often with announcements made through the 'Dragalia Digests' on YouTube as well as the 'This Month in Dragalia Lost' articles.

Miscellaneous[edit]

Dragalia Lost features an extra called 'Dragalia Life,' a chibi-styled comic series, similar in format of a yonkoma manga.[7] The comics follow the lives of the adventurers and dragons that live or visit the Haildom. The series features comedic moments and ongoing jokes throughout the releases.

Another series called the 'Adventurers Guide' is a similarly styled comic series to 'Dragalia Life.' 'Adventurers Guide' aids new players and teaches basic gameplay mechanics and what items and resources do.[8]

A single day event occurred on April 1, 2020, where on April Fool's day, the Wagabond Pupper event was added. Players could collect 'Pup Grub' from other quests and feed it to the dog in the Dragon's Roost. The puppy could also be played with in the Walkies quest.[9] The feature is intended to be added in the future outside of April Fool's.

Merchandise[edit]

Merchandise began to be sold in late October 2018, where fans could buy acrylic stands as well as clear files.[10] In April 2019, Cygames announced that plushies of the five greatwyrms would be added as official merchandise as well.[11]

Reception[edit]

The game received fairly positive praise for its game-play, as well as its lore, characters, and world development. However, critics see that Nintendo conforming to the gacha gaming genre of mass micro transactions in order to succeed is disappointing.[12] Critics essentially viewed it as 'a slick version of the same games in the App Store.'[13]

However, since the release of the game, the Cygames developers have created more ways of accessing in-game currency in order to keep up with players who pay money.
