I've been using this Three-Letter_Acronym since about 1972. Back then, I was certain nobody else was using it, but with the advent of the Internet (not the web), WHOIS showed me a few others, notably one fellow at Stanford, which was just down the road. (I sent him a note asking, "What's the x stand for? Yuk, Yuk!" and got no reply.) But I have jxh.com (and have been in WHOIS for many years). So there.

Why the "x"? Do I have a middle name? (yes) Does it start with "x"? (no). Because the TLA of my actual name collided with 3 other people at the same institution, where this was the preferred form of computer-system username. A good friend suggested "why don't you just put an 'x' there?". I have no idea where he came up with this, but I liked it, and it stuck.
