The creation of the word is credited to supermodel Tyra Banks (pictured)

Smize[edit]

'Smize' is a portmanteau of the words 'smiling' and 'eyes' and denotes the act of 'smiling with one's eyes'[1]. This is a skill taught to models to appear attractive and engaged without physically smiling, to produce better photographs[2]. Smizing involves squinting the eyes and lowering the eyebrows.

Origins[edit]

The term 'smize' was first coined by supermodel Tyra Banks during the thirteenth season of America's Next Top Model[3]. It was developed in order to enhance photos of supermodels and Banks claims it is her secret to delivering a stunning photo[4].

In Popular Culture[edit]

In addition to usage on the show, Banks has also instructed others on how to smize during promotional interviews[5], most notably Larry King. [6] Another notable figure that has used the smize is German-Filipino model Pia Wurtzbach. During Miss Universe 2015, Wurtzbach 'smized' which Banks complimented her later on Twitter. [7]
