This is a proposed naming convention for articles on railway stations in Europe, excluding the United Kingdom, which is subject to Wikipedia:Naming conventions (UK stations), though it is substantially the same as that convention.

Official names

The official name of the station should normally be used with the appropriate suffix, except where this would be ambiguous.

If there is any doubt about what the official name is, the name given on the station platforms should be used.

The last official name should be used for closed stations. Where this is now in use elsewhere the closed station should take the disambiguation.

Disambiguation

In cases where stations have ambiguous names, disambiguate them according to the disambiguation policy and guideline. Use natural disambiguation if available (e.g. Freienbach SBB railway station and Freienbach SOB railway station use common names to distinguish two stations in Freienbach). Otherwise add a distinguishing term in parentheses.

Stations in Europe requiring disambiguation should use standard parenthetical disambiguation: Xxx railway station (Location). The term in parentheses should follow this guide:

• Country, for cases where the name is only ambiguous with entries from other countries.
• State/Province/Department/Canton/Locality, for cases where the station name is ambiguous within the same country.
• Railway/operator, date, etc., for cases where there are multiple stations of the same name in the same place, as may happen with historical stations.

Language-specific notes

Danish

For railway halts (Danish: Trinbræt), use "railway station" in the title but note the translation in the main text.

German

For stations in German-speaking countries named x Hauptbahnhof, do not translate Hauptbahnhof nor abbreviate it. Examples:

• Berlin Hauptbahnhof
• Frankfurt (Main) Hauptbahnhof

Portuguese

For railway halts (Portuguese: Apeadeiro), use "railway station" in the title but note the translation in the main text.
