The last sultan of Riau-Lingga, Abdul Rahman II Muazzam Shah was stripped from his throne following his arrest by the Dutch authorities on 11 February 1911. The deposition of the sultan was announced to the public on the same day. The Dutch East Indies government annexed the former kingdom into its territory and established a Direct rule (Dutch: Rechtreek bestuur) over the Riau Archipelago in 1913, and the region was administered as the Residency of Riau and Dependencies.
