Molvi Mushtaq Ahmad, was a kashmiri politician who was the cousin of Mirwaiz Umar Farooq , a retired civil servant succumbed to injuries when an unknown guman shot him in the back when he was praying in a mosque.

He succumbed to his injuries on 7 June 2004 after battling for 9 days. [1]

He is known as "Shaheed- e-Masjid"[2] for being assassinated in a a mosque.

Early Life[edit]

While little is publicly known about Molvi Mushtaq, he had been active politically from an early age with his relative Mohammad Farooq Shah, the Mirwaiz at the time.

He helped form the J&K Awami Action Committee, a political organization that sought the resolution of the Kashmir conflict.

Death[edit]

On 29 May 2004, while praying in a local mosque in Srinagar, J&k, an unknown gunman approached him from behind and shot him. He had been surrounded by around 25 people so this most likely appeared to be a targeted killing.

The reasons for his death are not clear but most likely it is an indirect message to his cousin, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq who had in the days leading up to the shooting been trying to engage with India for the resolution of the Kashmir conflict.
