The United States Basketball Association (USBA) was a proposed professional minor division men's basketball league which was first announced in July 2007 and has yet to commence play as of March 2010.

Background[edit]

The USBA's planned basketball season began in early April and concludes in early July. The league was originally set to begin playing in April 2008,[1][2] but the start has been delayed to 2009 then 2010.[3] The USBA has since named April 8, 2011 as the league's inaugural season opening date.[citation needed] No more news about the men's league has been released since.

The USBA plans to retain principal ownership of all league team. While it planned to initiate its first season with eighteen basketball teams spread out over ten southern states and the District of Columbia, March 2010 reports stated that only 12 or 14 teams would begin play.[4][5] Each USBA team will play a thirty game schedule, fifteen home games and fifteen away games.

WUSBA[edit]

The group attempting to start this league has also attempted to start a women's league, called WUSBA, in March 2010 for the 2010 summer season. The league official announced they would attempt to start the league again for 2011 on May 27, 2010. The start of the new league was pushed back to September 2011, later to April 2012, but the league will not now be starting operations by then.[6][7][8]

Other groups[edit]

An organization called the "United States Basketball Association", which does not appear to be affiliated with the league announced in 2007,[9] has sponsored an annual youth tournament in North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, which started in 2007.[10][11][12]
