Green River Festival[edit]

The Green River Festival is an annual summer music and arts festival held on a weekend in July at the Greenfield Community College in Greenfield, Western Massachusetts. It was founded in 1986 by Jim Olsen, the  president and cofounder of Signature Sounds Recordings. The event features musical artists from many genres of music, including folk, indie rock, alternative country, blues and reggae, as well as art and hot air ballooning.[1] The festival hosts over 30 bands on three different stages [2]– the Tea Guys Main Stage, Parlor Room Stage, and Dean’s Stage[3]. It is a three day Festival, with a variety of different ticket passes[4]: weekend pass (with or without camping), single day pass, one night pass, 3 day pass. Children under 10 years of age gain free admission[5] to the festival and camping. There is a Kids stage and arcade[6] that hosts children’s music and performers, as well as an art garden, art activities tent, games, circus acts, a mardi gras parade and much more. The Festival hosts a variety of great local food, accommodating vegans and meat-lovers, beer and wine, a handmade craft fair and family activities and games. Each morning and evening hot air balloons are launched for customers, and on Saturday night 10 hot air balloons are released to perform a light show with bands playing in the background[7].

Location and Festival Grounds[edit]

The Green River Festival is an annual music and arts festival held in Greenfield, Western Massachusetts. It takes place at Greenfield Community College, One College Drive, Greenfield, Ma 01301. It is wheelchair accessible, but remains on the grass, with ample handicapped parking. There is also accessible viewing areas for each stage, with which you are allowed 2 people to accompany you, and accessible bathrooms.

The festival has 3 separate stages[8]:

·     Tea Guys Main Stage: The main stage is located in the upper field and hosts the headlining acts

·     Dean Bean’s stage: Features world music and dance, dedicating Friday to all Latin acts

·     Parlor Room stage: features local teen bands exclusively.

The Kid’s Area consists of a Kid’s Stage which hosts children’s music and performers, and an arcade tent with free activities and games. The Art Garden Arcade will feature lawn and Carnival games and there will also be a Mardi Gras parade.

There has recently been a fourth stage added called the Green House stage[9], which is a small house that will have musicians playing on the porch. It is meant to educate the audience and showcase more environmentally friendly and sustainable housing options.

Organisation[edit]

Jim Olsen is the director of the Green River festival, and also the Talent buyer[10]. Olsen, along with Ann Hamilton and Bob diamond, were on the original planning committee and helped to merge the festival back in 1987[11]. Over the years, the Green River Festival has grown and attendance was approximately 13,000 in 2015[12] and is expected to rise the coming years. The Festival is working to become more environmentally-friendly to reduces its carbon footprint. To do this, organisers at the Green River Festival have partnered up with Klean Kanteen, a reusable water bottle company, in order to eliminate the use of plastic water bottles through the Cup Karma program. The Green River festival will be offered discounts in drinks purchased in reusable Klean stainless steel pints throughout the event as a part of this program, and no plastic water bottles will be sold on site[13]. Klean will also provide water refill stations to reduce waste from single-use water bottles. In 2017 the festival also started a bike valet program, which encourages festival-goers to bike to the event rather than drive[14]. They have also created a new bike path to and from the campground and a new ride-share program to increase popularity of this program. In addition to banning all plastic bottles, all food and drink vendors are required to use compostable plates and utensils. There will be recycling and compost stations around the festival grounds. Furthermore, there will be solar-powered stage operations and charging stations – seen through the Parlor Room stage which will be solar powered[15].

History[edit]

The festival begun in 1986 where it originated as two separate events at the Greenfield Community College held a week apart[16]. A concert that featured 2 bands – NRBQ and 10,000 Maniacs was staged to celebrate the two events. The first saw the Franklin Country Chamber of Commerce sponsor their first Balloon fair; and the following weekend the WRSI local radio station celebrated their 5th-year anniversary[17]. The Festival grew and the two events merged to eventually become the Green River Festival. Early on, the festivals main focus was on ballooning, but that soon changed in 1990 when the festival featured music legend Dr John and other renowned talent, including Alison Krauss & Union Station, Taj Mahal, Gillian Welch & David Rawlings. The Festival changed its name to the Green River Festival in 2001, and expanded their event to include more artists and multiple music stages. Currently in its 32nd year, the Green River Festival has seen to of hosted dozens of musical legends including: Emmylou Harris, Buddy Guy, Lucinda Williams, Mavis Staples, Arlo Guthrie, Steve Earle, The Avett Brothers, Deer Tick, Neko Case, Calexico, Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings and CAKE.
