Patrick Shin, born as Nan Chul Shin in South Korea, is a popular general contractor in Hawaii. Based in Honolulu, Hawaii, his young construction company Nan Inc surpassed a billion dollars in preconstruction, general contracting and design-build. Since 1999, he is holding the second rank amongst top 25 general contractors of Hawaii in Hawaii Building Magazine. Today, his company is one of the largest building firms in Hawaii. An active member of many charitable trusts, Shin is also a sponsor of many well-known Hawaiian events.

Early Years and Education[edit]

Patrick Shin was born to poor parents in South Korea in a one-bedroom home and has five siblings. His family of ten was extremely poor, who used to live in a mud shack. When he grew up, he moved to the US and started living with his elder brother in Bronx, New York. He used to help his brother in his fish business. During his stay in New York, he was offered a scholarship to Bowling Green State University for soccer in Ohio; where he went on to do his major in business administration, which further helped him to be the part of the Hawaii Pacific University for their Soccer Program.

After graduating from Bowling Green State University, Shin returned to Hawaii and started working as a laborer for a construction company.

Journey As A General Contractor[edit]

Two years after working as a laborer for some construction firm in Hawaii, Patrick Shin founded his own company with the name Nan Inc in the year 1990 in Honolulu. Initially, it was a one-man business, which eventually turned out to be a 500-employee workplace in 2010. He started it with the smallest of construction projects. His first contract was an installation of a single road sign, which he completed with determination and integrity. Today, his company is Hawaii’s largest locally owned and operated general contractor, which is known for its incredible capacity to build.

Patrick Shin has handled more than 2,500 engineering and construction projects and has won many awards for his skills and talent in just a period of 26 years. Today, he has his offices in Guam as well as Maui, Hawaiian Island, and Oahu. His company specializes in preconstruction, design-build and general contracting and has successfully completed many multi-million-dollar renovations, technical upgrades, and maintenance of historic structures and features. His company Nan Inc has also been recognized as the top earning contracting business in the state of Hawaii.

In his construction journey of 26 years, Patrick Shin has also employed many subcontractors and small businesses to work with him. He has also undertaken many popular and successful projects in joint ventures that have helped him greatly to reach this level.

Popular Projects[edit]

Among the structures constructed or developed by the Nan Inc are ARFF Facility Improvements at Hilo International Airport, Kona Judiciary Complex, National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, Wheeler Army Airfield, NOAA Pacific Region Center, Schofield Barracks Renewal, to name a few. His company has completed a range of projects for different departments like Navy, Military, Civil, Historical, Aviation, Education, Hospitality, Transportation and Health and so on. Patrick Shin is the principal developer of Hawaii. He has also assisted in the building of the athletic complex, parks, and residential developments in and around Hawaii.

Charities[edit]

Patrick Shin is the founder of the Nan Inc Foundation, which focuses on enhancing the standard of living of the underprivileged. He is hugely committed towards the local Hawaiian community and is supporting many organizations in and around Hawaii. He’s an active supporter of the University of Hawaii, Kapiolani Medical Center, St. Francis HealthCare System of Hawaii, Hawaii Pacific University, and has also donated to schools and orphanages in Cambodia and Bangladesh. He has also contributed in sponsoring student travel to Cebu, the Philippines to volunteer with the cleanup effort.

He coordinates with the Honolulu Rotary Club to sponsor service projects in the Philippines. He serves food banks; organize many charity events like Special Olympics and events for women empowerment. He continuously supports and partner with the local communities and other entities worldwide to keep up with his Aloha way of living.

Family[edit]

Patrick Shin is a married man and has two daughters who equally support him and participate in his charity works.
