El man es Germán was a Television series produced and aired in Colombia, made by Juan Manuel Cáceres Niño. It is a spin-off series of the telenovela Las detectivas y el Víctor.[1] It was aired on Canal RCN, between December 20, 2010 until February 6, 2012. The series involves the various daily adventures of Germán Quintero, his fellow punk friends and his family. In addition, it integrates various cultural differences of the regions of Colombia interacting in the Bogota, the country's capital and main setting. This series incorporates the literary style of Costumbrismo, the interpretation of local life in the Hispanic scene.[2]

Synopsis[edit]

After an unmentioned travesty in the United States, namely in Miami, and having lived the "American Dream", the adult punk German returns to his neighborhood to, in his words, "reclaim his turf" (The hood), his mate (Jabsleidy) and his cub ( Jonathan). Once he returns, he discovers that an old acquaintance named Mrs. Graceliela, owns a gym in German's old neihgborhood, the perfect place to set his grounds. However, things are not easy for German as he quickly encounters two major obstacles in his life: the first is that his turf is being contested with Calixto, a long haired football coach that constantly hits on all the girls; and the other is that the love of his life, Jabsleidy, is happily married to 8-Ball, a long time rival. German's comfort lies on his son Jonathan (or "tiger" as he calls him), his cub, who is the happiest kid in the world when he is with his father. Another silver lining to German's life are his best friends and "pack": Frito, Michael Giovanny and Bulto 'e Sal who, no matter what, stay by German's side.[3]

Other notable characters that make constant appearances in the neighborhood are Mrs. Graciela, whom after marrying a rich foreigner, owns a gym and a variety store in the neighborhood, and Patty, an energetic, intensely talkative woman from Santander that is always keeping an eye on German, her current unrequited love. The series revolves around a complicated set of relationships with German and these three women; Jabsleidy, the ex whom he loves but does not love him back; Patty, the one whom loves him but he does not want; and Graceila, the one he gets stuck with as German desperately needs a job. In addition to the interactive relationships in German's life, this comedy shows the daily life of ordinary Colombians: the desperation and search for work of any kind, hope, love and rivalries, jokes, skipping on responsibilities from work and all other flaws and virtues that, as described on the official site are "all too Colombian".[4][5]

Cast and Characters[6][edit]

Primary Characters[edit]

  • Santiago Alarcón[7] - Germán Quintero "El Macho Alfa"
    • The Protagonist and self-proclaimed "alpha male", the dominant individual of his group of friends (IE: his herd). In reality, he's a fast talking, pretentious and overall lazy know-it-all thinking he can solve everything. He is the neighborhood bum, divorced, with only casual custody of his son on some weekends.
    • He represents the middle class Colombian, the run-of-the-mill person, whose usual saving grace is their kindness. He loves his family and friends more than anything, though he may not always have much to show for it. He is not the best son, nor a great friend or a suitable husband, but he is a great dad.
    • German's strength is not his intelligence, even though he thinks is smart. German claims to know all, and what he doesn't know he tends to make up on the spot. He knows every business, every way to cut corners that there ever was. As a typical Colombian, he constantly assumes, or "ass-u-me" as he says.[8]
  • Heidy Bermúdez[9] - Jasbleidy Cardozo "Chiquita Brava"
    • The Ex wife who, whenever German is up to something, awaits for his latest scheme to crumble around him so she can rub his face that he is a good-for-nothing, miserable bum, a real loser. And usually, she is right.[10]
  • Santiago Reyes - Cristian Rojas "Frito"
    • German's unconditional friend, his "dude" and right-hand man. Frito is the one friend that German can always look to when he's short on cash, the one that helps him up when he feels down, the one who helps him get past a Hangover, and the one who waits for him while you are in the emergency room after an accident. No matter the consequences, Frito is always the one to stand beside German.[11]
  • Marcela Gallego - Graciela Rodríguez "Doña Grace"
    • The one who is always in the know and keeps the community up to date on news around town, or if it's really interesting, around the neighborhood. Not one single snoop, rumor or story gets around without Mrs. Graciela knowing about it. One word from her is all you need to have your entire privacy and public image ruined.
    • She owns Gracy's Gym, a common place setting for a number of the series's episodes as well as the convenience store across the park.[12]
  • Aída Bossa - Laura Patricia Neira "Patty/Patyfastidio"
    • Patty came to Bogota because she believed her family wanted her to study and get ahead in life, but they really wanted to get rid of her as they cannot stand her. An intense and at times exhausting person to be around, she always tries to be the center of attention when she is present, or as she enters.
    • She is in love with German, since the moment she met him and will do anything to win over the heart of the alpha male, while he tries all he can to keep her as far away as possible.[13]
  • Jesús Forero - Jonathan David Quintero Cardozo "El Tigre"
    • German's son and at times, his voice of reason. Jonathan helps steer German to better actions and helps get his father out of his self started troubles every day. He is happiest when he is with his dad, and admires his throughput or "Cuando un macho alfa promete, cumple!"[12] (when an alpha male promises, he follows through!) no matter the situation or how dire it may seem.[14]
  • Santiago Rodríguez - Calixto López "El Macho Beta"
    • Nicknamed by German as the "Beta Male", Calixto is always looking for ways to diminish German's reputation and unofficial status as the alpha male of the neighborhood. Whether it be scoring girls, spreading rumors or outright sabotage, Calixto has a hand trying to remove German's chances to regain Jasbleidy's love.[12]
  • Rafael Zea - Michael Giovanny Santos "Risitas"
    • The meek and all around handyman and caretaker of the group, Michael Giovanny is the third of German's group. Multi-talented, mature but lacking self confidence, he is the manager of the group, feeding, paying bills and doing his best to support the group where he can, which usually means doing most of the work.[12]
  • Omar Murillo - Samir Porras "Bola 8"
    • Nicknamed "8 ball" due to his head shaped like a billiard ball, this loving husband and stepdad is constantly away on business as a private investigator, which inevitably triggers hope's in German that one day, he can reclaim his woman and his cub from this rival.[15]
  • Javier Peraza - Eduardo Emilio "Bulto 'e Sal"
    • German's 4th and predominantly silent group member and the unofficial third wheel, as the group usually don't hear or sometimes ignore what Bulto 'e Sal's has to say. Even so, this carefree and happy-go-lucky member is ready and willing to do his part for the herd.[12]
    • The name translates to bundle of salt, which is appropriate as he has a tendency to get injured at some point in each episode.

    • A regular old painter, who like German, is an alpha male and acts as a mentor in many occasions, with his own omega male and best friend Heraclio.

  • Fabián Mendoza -Edilberto "El Edil[17]"
    • With German's Help he was elected the Neighborhood Edil, always yelling and thinking to be a great politician while at the same time doing nothing of benefit to the public. He is attracted to Grace, and with German's help organizes certain events like the Miss Pretty pageant for the neighborhood.
  • Leidy Johana "La Picapolla"

  • Catalina
    • Jonathan's girlfriend, whom he is willing to do anything for.

Animal Characters[edit]

Live animals that acted as pets, or central points to one or more episodes.

  • Rocky Balboa
    • A fighting rooster that German and his herd found, whom they wanted to cook and eat, but German decided to train him, as he noticed that this rooster was also an alpha male like him.

Influence and legacy[edit]

The show continued having an effect off screen in Colombia. One particular example was due to German's Aerobic exercises, a well known gimmick of the show. The Isntituto Distrital De Recreation y Deported Hosted an aerobics exercise session based on the show and its repeated made up routines.[18] It took place at the Simon Bolivar Metropolitan Park in Bogota, Colombia on August 15, 2011. The event lasted 64 minutes, with a 12 minute warm up routine and a full 50 minute class. It currently holds the Guinness World record for largest exercise demonstration / class with a total of 50,420 attendants at the event.[19] In addition, after the shows' first season, the series took a turn towards the youth that viewed the show, guiding the writers to create stories to appeal to younger audiences while still retaining the essence and excitement of the first season. The writers said that the show " brings a possibility of returning to a comedy, that in fact, is apt for the whole family. Which is why in the second season we will emphasize more stories for younger viewers, as they showed a great interest in the first season." Another great influence on the show's direction was the diverse cultural music in Colombia, which inspired creators to produce and choreograph original songs and dances based on Hispanic styles of music such as Salsa, Reggae, Ranchera, Cumbia and various others.[20]
