Desalination plant in Namibia[edit]
Namibia being the driest country in Sub-Saharan Africa, there was need to get alternative sources of water supply for mines along the Namibian coast, apart from groundwater abstracted from the omdel aquifer.[1] The large-scale desalination plant ever in Sub-Saharan Africa[2] was inauguration by AREVA on the 16th of April 2010.[3] The plant is located at Wlotzkasbaken, 30km north of Swakopmund on the Atlantic coast.[4] The plant has a capacity desig to supply 45 million m3 of water per year [5] , however it is curentlly being operated at 20 million m3 of potable water per annum that is used to supply Trekkopje Uranium Mine, located 50 kilometres inland and the surrounding communities.
