The Lambton Kent District School Board is the school board responsible for public education in Lambton County and Kent County. The board serves over 24,000 elementary and high school students. The oldest school in the board is Sarnia Collegiate Institute and Technical School, which just celebrated its 90th birthday,[1] and its newest is P.E. McGibbon Elementary in Sarnia, Ontario.

Community Use of Schools[edit]

The Community Use of Schools initiative is a way of making school facilities accessible to the public. Such facilities include classrooms, gymnasiums, auditoriums, and more. The rental fees can range from as little as $1.50 a night to as much as $125.00 per night, plus applicable staff. [3]Quite often the staff will include janitors (if outside their regularly scheduled hours), but in some cases may included specialized staff for auditorium rentals. These staff are often specially trained students, but sometimes are outside professionals brought in by the host school to accommodate the renter's needs. Seminars, corporate events, dance recitals, and community theatre groups are the most common renters of the auditorium, whereas local sports tournaments are the most common renters of the gymnasiums.

Presentations that have occurred in these facilities include a presentation from Chris Hadfield[4], and amateur productions of musicals such as Les Miserables [5], Disney's Beauty and the Beast[6], Willy Wonka[7], Phantom of the Opera [8], and more.

eLearning[edit]

Recently, the Lambton Kent District School Board started offering an eLearning program, where full time students can earn high school credits through an online delivery system. These courses meet all curriculum standards and are facilitated by a teacher trained in online delivery techniques. Students may enrol in courses within their own school board, or within other school boards throughout the province. Many students take these courses because their desired courses may not be offered within their school board, or may not fit in their timetable. [9]

Social Media[edit]

The Lambton Kent District School Board operates two social media accounts, one on Twitter, which can be accessed here; and the other on Facebook which can be found at LKDSB Facebook.[10] The Twitter account appears to be authored by Jim Costello, the Director of Education[11]; whereas the Facebook account is credited simply to the Lambton Kent District School Board as a whole[12]. Each of these accounts post news and updates about the happenings across the entire board, and the Twitter account also often features Jim Costello bidding different groups good luck.
