Richard Kaiser is a Software Engineer by vocation and an Electronics Engineer by education who often works with embedded and real-time software and were the hardware and the software meet. Richard is lives in the Los Angeles, California, area but is temporarily in the Syracuse, New York, area working on a programming assignment. His two children are still in California as is his novel writing spouse.

Richard is one of Susan Gerbics trainees.

Interests[edit]

Richard's interests include history, especially WWII, aviation, endurance bicycle riding, computers and electronics, science, and wood working.

There are few laboratories that can test why people do what they do, but history does provide examples of actions in different circumstances. By studying history we can learn what works, what doesn't work, and how to make this world a better place. Since WWII put most of the world into trying conditions and forced many people to act against their self interest, it provides ample examples of motivations and actions of individuals and groups.

Engineering is a field that balances goals, constraints, ideas, and processes to produce new and better products. Reviewing the development of state of the art products through history provides a look back at the ideas and processes that are used in the engineering process. Aviation is one field that shows how designs advance with time.

Since one place to see history and aviation advancements is at museums, Richard is a volunteer at Planes of Fame Air Museum air museum in Chino, California. At POF, Richard serves as a docent and is helping with the preservation and restoration of a Grumman OV-1 Mohawk. Richard also has a private pilot's license, but has not been an active pilot for may years.

Fitness and economy both drive an interest is endurance bicycle riding. Richard is a LCI (League of American Bicyclists Cycling Instructor) and has completed two Ride The Rockies rides, a few double centuries, and innumerable century rides.

An interest in professional development and a personal interest in tinkering is occupied by electronics, computers, and software Richard is a fan of the low cost Arduino hardware, but the limitations of the projects development software have been found wanting. Software interests include C++, embedded and real-time software, Linux and especially Gentoo, and software security.

Richard has a full wood shop that has been use to build furniture, kitchen cabinets, and is now producing wood turnings. Currently, in the Syracuse NY area, only the wood Lathe is active as the rest of the shop is still in California.

Philosophy[edit]

Engineering is applied Science and is the most productive process for increasing human knowledge and improving are lives. Examples of its effectiveness include new discoveries and the eliminating dis-proven and rejected ideas. Experience with the scientific process over time has lead to the development of the current Scientific method. The Scientific Method is now the most effective process know for creating new ideas and discoveries, testing current ideas, and rejecting failed ideas. All claims must be proven to be accepted, but the evidence may incomplete and inconclusive, and must not be dis-proven. This means that the most effective testing tool in science is Falsifiability as a single case is enough to reject a claim or require that a claim be revised. For issues that cannot be addresses by Science, Philosophy and Academics provides the most effective analysis for an idea. Science and academics does have one weakness, it needs followers and educators that can educate non-scientific people in its processes and ideas or its advances will be limited to an educated few.
