Ryan Stephan is an American professional basketball player who currently plays for the Gunma Crane Thunders in the Japanese B.League.

High School Career & Awards[edit]

Stephan attended Green Mountain High School in Lakewood Colorado where he was awarded Jefferson County 4A First Team All-Conference award as both a junior (2010-11) and a senior (2011-12), and 4A All-State Honorable Mention award as a senior.[1]

College Career & Awards[edit]

Stephan was signed by the Colorado Mesa University (CMU) Mavericks, in Grand Junction, Colorado. The CMU Mavericks participate in the NCAA Division II Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC).

2012-13: As a true freshman, Stephan saw action in all 28 games and averaged 4.5 points and 1.8 rebounds and scored a season high 14 points at Black Hills State.

2013-14: Started all 27 games, averaging 18.4 points and 6.6 rebounds. Scored 10+ points in 25 of 27 games. Scored 20+ 13 times. Scored a season-high 27 points vs. Colorado Christian. Led the Mavericks and finished third in the RMAC in field goal percentage at .579. Ranked seventh in league in scoring, eighth in rebounding and seventh in blocks with 27.

2014-15: Started all 27 games, averaging 25.3 points and 8.5 rebounds, leading the team in . Shot .575 (235-409) from the field - including 40 3-pointers - second-best on the team. Led the team with 172 made free throws. Scored a season-high 40 points in win over No. 2 University of Colorado Colorado Springs[2]. Recorded 10 double-doubles. Led the team with 38 blocks which ranks fifth most in school history. Scored 30+ points seven times and on January 17 eclipsed the 1,000 career points milestone with a 3-pointer against Western State.[3] In the summer of 2015, Stephan was recruited to play for the Southwest Metro Pirates in Brisbane, Australia.[4]

2015-16: Stephan's preseason accolades included DII NCAA Division II College Basketball Preview[5], Division II Bulletin pre-season Super 16 All-American [6] Hero Sports DII Pre All-American, [7] Sporting News Small College Hoops Preseason All-American [8] and RMAC Preseason Player of the Year.[9]

Stephan's senior season highlights include:

  • December 19, 2015: scored a career high 36 points - including three late 3-pointers - to help CMU erase a 14-point deficit with under seven minutes to go and get CMU the OT road win over No. 24 Colorado School of Mines.[10][11]
  • January 23, 2016: scored a new career high 42 points against Chadron State.[12]
  • February 20, 2016: scored another career high 45 points against Regis University and tied the CMU single game scoring record - while also reaching the 2,000 point milestone for his career. [13] Stephan is only third player in CMU history to join the 2,000 point club. [14]

Stephan led the Mavericks to a 21-9 record - their best since 2009-10 - and concluded his CMU career #2 all-time in scoring with 2,073 points. He ranks in the CMU top ten in 15 different season and career categories and was named the CMU male athlete of the year. [15] Stephan is only the second player from CMU to be named the RMAC Men's Basketball Player of the Year and holds holds 9 RMAC records. [16] He is the first CMU player ever to be named National Player of the Year.

In May 2016, Stephan attended a tryout with the NBA's Denver Nuggets. [33] [34]

In June 2016, Stephan signed with the Japanese B.League Tokyo Excellence to begin his professional career. [35] During his 2016-2017 rookie season with the Excellence, Stephan averaged 17.9 points and 10.8 rebounds per game, leading the team in both categories. [36]

In July 2017, Stephan signed with the Japanese B.League Gunma Crane Thunders. [37] As of December 15, 2017, he averages 20.3 ppg (second in B.League) and 11.1 rpg (third in B.League). [38]
