... Named Janice Levin Dancer at NYCB: NYCB corps de ballet member Carla Körbes has been named the Company’s Janice Levin Dancer for the 2001/2002 season, it was announced by NYCB’s Ballet Master in Chief Peter Martins.

The Janice Levin Dancer award, created in 2000, is bestowed upon one of the most promising young members of the NYCB corps de ballet. Only students who have studied at the School of American Ballet are eligible for consideration. Mr. Martins selects the Janice Levin Dancer honoree each year. This year, the award will be presented to Ms. Körbes during NYCB’s Annual Luncheon on February 6, 2002.

The Janice Levin Dancer is made possible by an extraordinary endowment gift from Janice H. Levin to the Campaign for NYCB. Mrs. Levin, who passed away in March of 2001, was a member of NYCB’s Board of Directors since 1995. A stalwart supporter of young artists, Mrs. Levin’s generosity also included the creation of the Philip and Janice Levin Foundation Scholarship for gifted students at the School of American Ballet, where she also served on the board.

“Janice Levin was a great champion of young dancers, both at the School of American Ballet and at NYCB. Her interest in, and commitment to, these talented youngsters was extraordinary,” said Mr. Martins.

... was born in Porto Alegre, Brazil, and began her ballet training at age five with local teachers. From age 11 she studied at Ballet Vera Bublitz with Giane Teixeira and Carlla Bublitz. In 1996 Ms. Körbes continued her studies at the School of American Ballet, the official school of NYCB. Ms. Körbes became an apprentice with NYCB in October 1999 and joined the Company as a member of the corps de ballet in June 2000. Since joining, her repertory with the Company includes roles in ballets by George Balanchine, Peter Martins and Jerome Robbins. She has danced featured roles in Balanchine’s Divertimento No. 15, Episodes (Bach), and A Midsummer Night's Dream (Titania); Eliot Feld’s Organon; Angelin Preljocaj’s La Stravaganza, Miriam Mahdaviani’s Appalachia Waltz and Christopher Wheeldon’s Polyphonia. In addition, she originated a role in Christopher Wheeldon’s Scènes de Ballet and Mercurial Manoeuvres. She also originated a principal role in Richard Tanner’s Soirée and corps roles in Peter Martins’ Burleske. Ms. Körbes is a 1999 recipient of the Mae L. Wien Award.
