Bromarv (Swedish pronunciation: [ˈbroːmɑrv, ˈbruː-];[2] Finnish: Bromarv) is a village and former municipality in Raseborg, Finland. Bromarv was merged with Pohja and Karis to form the new municipality of Raseborg on January 1, 2009.[3]

The port town of Hanko is locate 15 kilometres (9.3 mi) south of Bromarv.

The town was bilingual, with the majority being Swedish speakers (91,7%).

It is noted for its archipelago, part of which is the Raseborgs västra skärgård.

History[edit]

Bromarv is an old Swedish settlement. According to accepted history, Swedish settlers began colonizing the coast of southwestern Finland in the 12th century, which had previously only been visited by nomadic hunters and fishermen.[4]

In the end of the 19th century, Bromarv became popular amongst summer residents from Helsinki that built villas along the peninsula. Amongst the political elite that built villas in Bromarv were senator A.M. Hornborg, senator Leo Mechelin and politician Karl Söderholm.[5] Known later Summer resident was author and politician Jörn Donner.[6]

Bromarv became a chapel in 1677 with the Tenala parish. Bromarv formed its own parish in 1881. Bromarv had an independent parish from 1881 to 1997 when it became part of Ekenäsnejdens kyrkliga samfällighet.[7] Bromarv's church from the 18-century burnt down in 1979 and a new church was built in 1981.[8][5]

Bromarv was an independant municipality from 1865 to 1977. In 1874 Hanko was separated to an own city. In 1977 Bromarv became part of Tenala municipality, which in 1993 became part of Ekenäs, which in 2009 formed together with Karis and Pohja the city of Raseborg.

Bromarv was also the name of a sub-region of Uusimaa, also known as Nyland.

Sights[edit]

  • Bromarv church was built in 1981 in the same place as the previous one from the 1700s.
  • Bromarf Hembygdsmuseum is a local museum.[9]
  • There are two memorial stones of the Battle of Gangut in 1714 at Rilax.[10]
  • Padva beach is shallow with fine sand popular amongst wind surfers and children.[11]

  • The Connecting road 1081 leads to National road 52 that leads from Ekenäs to Salo.
  • There is a bus connection to Helsinki and Hanko.[12]
  • The closest railway stations are in Salo (61 km by car from Bromarv harbour) and Ekenäs (32 km).[13][14]
  • Bromarf Skärgårdshamn is a harbour service for small boats with space for 25 guest boats.[15]
