My Name is Shelby Hill-Killerlain and I am a first year student at Drake University. My Global Youth Studies class is aiming to broaden the knowledge on wikipedia concerning youth.
Research Plan[edit]
For my project I will be working on the Menarche article and expanding the cultural and rites of passage portion. Currently the page is scarce and focuses more on the biological aspect of Menarche than the cultural aspects. Menarche, and menstruation have traditionally been a marker for womanhood, or the transition from childhood into adulthood. What is available in this section are links to other pages concerning cultural rituals dealing with Menarche. I will work on putting this information, and the new information that I plan to gather on Menarche page under the culture section.
My plan for gathering research is to look at existing Wikipedia articles and find other resources, either at the library or available online. Once I have a more adequate amount of knowledge on the cultural and ritual aspects regarding Menarche I also plan to add the information that I find to the Coming of Age article. Most of the information on the coming of age page either are not male or female specific, or a predominantly male.
I also want to link the Menarche, Coming of Age, and Rite of Passage article together. The reason for this is that it would make research done by others easier to have related topics connected. Menarche is not just a biological function. It serves an important marker in many young women's lives and often times comes with rituals that have cultural and social significance and therefore should be connected to the coming of age and rite of passage article.
