Discussion/Questions[edit]

Q1: For a given article here, how do you find your way to the WLM photo that is nominated. E.g., for the Arena Cove H D article, there are about 50 WLM photos. How find the one or two nominated?

They are in order by letter on the page Commons:Commons:Wiki Loves Monuments 2012 in the United States/List . I'll put some photo names in.
Thanks for that link and suggestion; that worked for me to find the Arena Cove one. --doncram

Q2: Is it a Good Thing to create stub articles for all of these? In whose opinion, or with what qualifications (that a NRHP nomination document must exist online, or what?). I have personally been trashed tons for starting stubs for better reasons than to hold a picture, if the article is not immediately reaching arbitrary standards posed by, well, editors who hate to see short stubs. --doncram

I wouldn't write a stub so short that editors will jump all over you - why tempt fate? Why risk wasting your own and others' time on spats when there are enough topics to write a "good stub" about.
That said, I'd probably concentrate on the photos that you think have a chance of winning one of the top 10-12 spots. I'd love it, if when the results were announced, that we have an article for each winning photo. At that time we can probably quickly update each article to at least Start quality, if the basic references were already there. Smallbones(smalltalk) 22:04, 10 October 2012 (UTC)
Well, one can hope to avoid spats if there is a consensus among a large enough group of mutually supporting editors that the articles should be created, with whatever sources may be available, and that could apply for this set. If the editors would support each other and help stop evil, ANI-bashing if it starts up, as they should. Not saying you have not been supportive in combatting some evil.
But okay, i thought you were calling for articles for all of these, while i guess you are not. I started by doing ones in states (CA, UT) where NRHP nom docs should be available from the NPS. VA and SC ones should have some state-provided NRHP material, but the others appearing here now are likely not to have readily available info about the NRHP listing. It's certainly more efficient to start articles and then see what sources come to light, than it is to look for sources and only then decide. Many editors separately will be evaluating the same article topic, and maybe each not choosing to open an article, while if the article was just started the multiple separate editors could likely put together more sources. I'll leave it to others to evaluate whether they want to start these ones, I guess.
For the record, the one here started so far with nothing but NRIS reference is Youngerman Block, not mine. :)
If your goal is to have articles for the top 12 or so candidates, it would be a lot more efficient if you would share your guesses for those. --doncram
I started from the back - having never, to my knowledge, written an NRHP article about a property in Iowa, I now know why: there's nothing in the way of sourcing. While I would not under normal circumstances write such a short stub, I felt that these circumstances dictated a more relaxed approach, but I now share Smallbones' concern that the image may not actually be of the subject building. I'll do some more hunting: I can always delete the article. Acroterion (talk) 03:16, 11 October 2012 (UTC)
IMO it would be bizarre and a waste to go backwards. The existence of the article helps focus others' attention. It documents that you tried. Others with resources can take it forward. Anyhow, it has been somewhat improved. I followed its cryptic William Foster mention (in the architect or builder field, not displaying) and developed William Foster (Iowa architect) article, now linked. With meaningful connection to that architect article, and thence to other Iowa buildings, I think the article has real value for current readers, besides marking where editors are at so far. And Smallbones added a pic external link that should be usable for verifying the building is correct or not. I say never go backward, if only we go forward then everything will start to tie together. --doncram 04:39, 11 October 2012 (UTC)
I've received the NRHP nom from the Iowa SHPO and it supports the photograph, so we can cross that one off the list. I'll expand the article from the documentation (which is extensive). Acroterion (talk) 17:14, 11 October 2012 (UTC)
Iowa note I've asked the Iowa SHPO's office for nominations for the five Iowa locations whose pictures appear below. Acroterion (talk) 02:19, 16 October 2012 (UTC)

Q3: Where there exists a specific Commons category corresponding to one article, like the commons category "commons:Category: Nevada City Downtown Historic District (California)" corresponding to wikipedia article Nevada City Downtown Historic District, one wants to link the commons category from the NRHP article. How? (Could someone explain and/or add the proper link for the Nevada City example.) (This could go into wp:NRHPhelp advice.)

Q4: Where does not yet exist a separate Commons category, but the county-specific category includes a lot of pics specific to a given HD, it seems it would be good for the Commons category to be split. Specifically so that the NRHP article could get a specific commons category link to those photos. Any comments/instructions on how to do that in Commons? (This could go into wp:NRHPhelp advice. A selected few pics could be put directly into the wikipedia article using <gallery></gallery>, but all should be referenced by the commons category link.)

  • Is there any better way to do this (e.g. by some batch edit in Commons, or by request to some bot, or by a Commons AWB-type editor tool, to change the categories?) rather than tedious individual edits, e.g., in each of 20 or 30 commons articles to replace [[:Category:National Register of Historic Places in Mendocino County, California]] by more specific [[:Category:Main Street Historic Commercial District (Point Arena, California)]], over at commons? I did some of the Point Arena HD ones but am burned out....--doncram

Comment: WLM winners have been announced: 3 pics having articles, not among these. 54 articles started as part of this drive, listed below. My count of articles NOT created, further below, currently redlinks, is 37. Articles started by Acroterion, Ymblanter, KudzuVine, Smallbones, me. I enjoyed this; thanks all; thanks Smallbones for organizing. --doncram 07:42, 1 November 2012 (UTC)
