North Port Public Library is located in North Port, Sarasota County,Florida.

History[edit]

The building where the original North Port library was housed in was constructed in 1963, with the library occupying 3,533 square feet. The North Port library was founded by the Friends of the North Port Area Library, a group associated with the North Port Women's Club.[3] The origianal building was converted into a library in 1974 and the facility leased by the county until 1989 when it came under full ownership of Sarasota County [4].

In 1993 the original library was demolished and a new 12,400 square feet library was built. The new library building "was the first project built with the one-cent sales tax passed by the citizens of Sarasota County for capital improvements" [5]. To help support the new library building, the Friends of the Library Enhancement Fund Task Force raised $200,000 following the expansion.[6]

In 2005, the library expanded by 7,200 to the current building's 19,600 square feet construction. The new features included in the expansion were a computer lab, a larger children's area, a larger meeting room, and a small bookstore for the Friends of the Library[7].
