Noel Leeming is a New Zealand multi-channel[3] consumer electronics retailer owned by The Warehouse Group.[4] It was originally founded in Christchurch by Mr. Noel Leeming in 1973 as a television and home appliance servicing group called Noel Leeming Televisions.[5] The brand expanded into a retail chain and in 1986 opened its first branch in the North Island.

Noel Leeming operates across New Zealand both as physical branches and as an online store since 2002.[6] It primarily sells consumer electronics and appliances across both retail and commercial customers.[3][7]

As of 2019 the brand has 77 stores across the country[2]. The brand's current CEO is Tim Edwards, which he was appointed in 2013.[8]

History[edit]

Foundation (1973–1995)[edit]

The brand was founded as "Noel Leeming Television" in 1973. The brand took its name from its founder, Mr. Noel Leeming.[9] The first Noel Leeming branch opened in 1973 was located in Barrington Park Mall in Christchurch.[9][10] The brand continued to expand through the South Island. The brand opened their first North Island branch in Auckland in 1986. Leeming retired as managing director of the brand mid-1992. Rapid expansion continued across the North Island through 1993.[9]

Pacific Retail Group and Bond & Bond (1996–2004)[edit]

The brand merged with national technology brand Bond & Bond in September 1996 under a trading group "Pacific Retail Group". At the time the group had approximately 90 branches across the country, made up of both brands.[9]

In 2001, Pacific Retail Group launched a new brand called Big Byte. Big Byte operated as a retailer for computing-related goods with a market of consumers and small businesses.[11]

Pacific Retail Group was bought over by Gresham Private Equity in 2004 and was renamed "Noel Leeming Group".[11]

Gresham Private Equity (2004–2012)[edit]

In 2005, Noel Leeming Group made the decision to shut down the Big Byte brand with reasoning that the computer and home entertainment markets were converging and retailing these separately was no longer relevant.[11] The group is more focused on repositioning the Bond & Bond chain to focus on technology products. New stores opened later in the year.[11]

Acquisition from The Warehouse Group and services (2012–present)[edit]

The Warehouse Group acquired Noel Leeming Group from Gresham Private Equity for NZ$65 million, effective from 10 December 2012.[12]

In 2013, the group announced the closer of all physical Bond & Bond stores with the brand being repurposed as an online-only clearance centre.[13][14] A year later the online clearance centre closed[14] and was repurposed through the Noel Leeming brand.[15]

Noel Leeming acquired Maclean Technology in December 2013, an experienced team that deliver specialist professional IT services to New Zealand companies.[16]

In 2015 the brand rolled out the "Open Learning Centre" initiative, where customer's can book sessions with a technician for servicing / learning about their product.[17]

The brand acquired local appliance clearance brand Appliance Shed in 2018 and repurposed three of the stores as Noel Leeming Clearance Centre's and one store as a Torpedo7 branch.[18][19][20]

Controversies[edit]

In August 2011, Noel Leeming received criticism after it was accused of selling limited stock of the HP TouchPad to staff during a limited quantity sale shortly after it was discontinued.[21]

In December 2018, Noel Leeming was fined $200,000 for misleading consumers about their rights under the Consumer Guarantees Act (CGA) following a Commerce Commission prosecution. Noel Leeming was convicted on eight charges under the Fair Trading Act.[22][23]

Tech Solutions[edit]

Noel Leeming Tech Solutions is the flagship tech support service offered by The Warehouse Group.[24] It is the countries largest TV installer.[25]
