At 21 he traveled to Sydney for the first time and immediately hopped aboard QF1 to London arriving in February, 1986 to find in his mind the coldest place on earth. Life and work was good in London enhanced by travel throughout the continent. Once the winter approached he headed to Asia as a respite, returning to London the following April and commenced driving buses for Top Deck Travel around Europe eventually moving onto the overland. The overland covered most of the territory between London and Kathmandu in Nepal. The never ending trips became but a blur until 1980 when his final trip was undertaken, the 20 week Sydney to London overland. A punter from that trip, Mathilde from the Netherlands eventually set up home in Sydney with him. He joined the N.S.W cops in 1982 serving in the volatile station of Cabramatta before transferring to the country town of Forster where he performed General Duties and Criminal Investigation work as a Detective. After 21 years in the job and a comfortable life in Forster with his wife and their three sons he retired 'Hurt on Duty' from the N.S.W police.

In 2003, Carroll began to write, at first he concentrated on a book about his overland tours with Top Deck bearing the name == Crossing Continents with Top Deck, the travel revolution of the 70s - 90s == before taking a break and writing about his time at Cabramatta and Forster with the N.S.W Police with a book titled == The Cops, not just a job == .

Crossing Continents with Top Deck was published in 2017 and has received excellent reviews from readers and some media.
